Time To Shine Today Podcast Varsity Squad this is Scott Ferguson. And when my good friend Rena Watts says, I need to interview somebody and introduce them to you, my squad, that is going to help you level up. And I jump at it, like, right away. And she introduced me to a fantastic human being, Leisa Reid. And she’ll ask you, do you want to make a bigger impact in your business? Share expert secrets on how to utilize public speaking speaking to broaden your reach. And let us listen to my good friend here, my new friend, I would say, should say Leisa Reid. She works with entrepreneurs. She works with just everyday fellows sometimes to really kind of level up and get speaking gigs. And that is plural with an S. So if you have a passion for getting in front of people, because a lot of people, they say the number one phobia, maybe behind death is the fear of public speaking. But if you’ve really got past that, you want to level up more people and get more meat in the seats and share your message, then you’re going to hear some. Serious knowledge nuggets here. And, Lisa, thank you so much for coming on. Please introduce yourself to the time to shine today podcast varsity squad. But first, what’s your favorite color and why? I think right now my favorite color is gold. Gold? Why? I don’t know. It feels rich. It feels royal. It feels beautiful. I love it. It does. And across all, whether the good book of the bible or any other book, gold has kind of always been the standard for I’ll share a secret. I have about five pairs of gold shoes. Scott really? Well, because you need more than one pair of gold shoes, obviously. So when I say gold is definitely my favorite color right now, I’m representing love. It rocks in your color. You’re such a beautiful lady, and you can rock probably pretty much any color, but I can definitely see you rock. Goal. So let’s get a little bit to the grassroots, kind of where you kind of started in your little journey now to helping people really love. Up their speaking business. Well, I actually started when I was in college. I have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in speech communication. And I tell people that because, ironically, you don’t need that in order to be a public speaker. I didn’t become a public speaker till I was 40, which was ten years ago. I know I don’t look like I’m we look good. I’m 51. Yeah, we are looking good over here. And I was hired by a personal development company. I loved the work they did, and they said, hey, we’ve got this talk. This is how we get clients into our workshops. Just go teach people about mindset. What do you say? And bring those clients in. And I said, yeah, that sounds awesome. So I started doing that. My first year, I booked 83 speaking engagements in my local area. And I loved it. I was super fun. I wasn’t nervous about the speaking. I know lot of people have that issue, but that wasn’t the issue. But it was like, wait, how does this whole speaking thing work? How do you get out there? How do you get people to say yes? And what I wasn’t expecting. Was all the people in my network were saying were asking me for help with that. They’re like, well, wait. I don’t need personal development, which we all do. They weren’t focused on that. They said, how do I get on more stages? How are you doing what you’re doing? And at the time, I didn’t think it was any big deal. I was like, Well, I’m just, like you said, putting my head down, working, doing my thing. And after a couple of years, I realized, oh, okay. There’s a gap here. There’s all these entrepreneurs who have a desire to fill their stuff, fill their workshop, do their thing, share their message. But they were not sure how to do that. So that’s when I started writing and teaching. Really. So do speakers reach out to you a lot of times. Really, to help them or how does your? Okay, so if I’m at a networking event, I’m pressing Flash, meeting people, and I am like, what am I listening for them to say to make them a great referral for. Right. So typically, I always say, if you hear speaker, think of Lisa. Speaker Lisa. Speaker Lisa. Because no matter where they are on their journey, if they’re a beginner or have a desire to speak, I can definitely help them in the Speaker’s Training Academy. But if they’re maybe more a seasoned speaker, possibly it’s a referral partner for me. I also run the OC Speakers Network. I’ve had that group for ten years, and so I can help speakers in lots of different capacities. It’s really one way of marketing your business that a lot of some people are never going to want to do. But the people who love speaking, like you, who find it super fulfilling, they’re like, yeah, how do I get the microphone, and how long do I have? Sure. Were you always into public speaking, though? Like, when you’re when you were younger and whatnot, you had no problem getting on the stage and sharing stories? I never had a fear of it, but I wouldn’t say I was like. At me. Look at me. Superstar in that capacity. I didn’t want that attention, but it really comes from a teaching perspective. I remember when I was little, I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. Then I wanted to be a gymnastics teacher, which I actually did end up becoming a gymnastics coach. And I did teach at the university level. So I’ve always had that interest in teaching. And that to me, is where I think of speaking as teaching. Not everyone does, but that’s my particular. If you’re learning something that’s going to help you gosh, I think that’s awesome, and it’s really fulfilling. So are you more in helping the people get gigs versus helping them with their speaking techniques? It’s actually a little somewhere in the middle kind of mess. What I find is that people have a desire to speak, but then they start question seeing themselves. I call it Speaker’s Kryptonite. Like, okay, what should I talk about? I’ve three decades of knowledge. How do I pare that down? And what do. People really want to know, or maybe they get invited to speak and they’re so excited about it, but then it kind of falls flat. They’re like, that didn’t really go so well. We get doubts, and even the most intelligent, confident people have doubts. So my goal, my job, how I’ve hired myself to do this job, is help somebody get ready to say yes, because I think of, like, any resistance that’s going to get in the way of you being on stage. We want to get rid of that as much as we can. Right? It’s already like, you’re going to be vulnerable, you got to be courageous, all that stuff. But how can we lower the resistance, increase the confidence, increase your certainty so that you are ready to rock. And that means, like, we got to get your talk ready so that you are in love with it. You need to have a clear call to action so that the audience is clear if you’re not clear, so there’s, like, all these little pieces. So it’s not so much let me book you. I want to teach you how you can get booked forever for the rest of your career. You don’t need me forever. Let me teach you how to fish. You don’t. To give you a fish, right? Right. Yeah. I love it. And that’s kind of really included across your platform with your company. It’s kind of like the soup, the nuts, with regards to you can help them mesh the presentation and their story to keep people engaged, but also how to really work through and get that I guess their coffers filled with money when you get paid to speak. Right? Yeah. And it’s really strategizing with them. It’s like kind of linking arms. It’s so interesting that we’re talking as we get more into this, because a lot of times people think, oh, so you’re like, toastmasters, or you’re a public speaking coach? You’re going to tell them where to put their hands on their arms or whatever? No. Most of the time people come to me, they already are really comfortable. They’re like, I just want to do it more. But they’re having a hard time strategizing. Like, when should I say yes? When should I say no? What if they don’t have a budget? What do I say? What do I say if they ask me, how much do I charge? What do I pay to speak? How does this whole. Work. And how I think of it is, like, speaking as a deck of cards, we can play a bunch of different games with a deck of cards. You can say solitaire, poker, strip poker, whatever game you want to play. You need to know the rules, right? You want to be the one naked at the table. So you got to figure out, like, okay, what game am I playing? And there’s different games in speaking, and so different things are right for different people in their business, right? So you should kind of have the right horse for the course, depending on the event, especially. And whatnot trust me, I’ve showed up and spoke at a few, more than a few, that I probably had no right being there. And I’m not saying I couldn’t present people weren’t engaging, but it was just like, I don’t know if what I that’s not a match, right? Yeah. I think of it as, like, matchmaking. Like, you don’t want to just say yes to everything. That’d be like, if you’re single and you’re like, if you’re single, I’ll date you. I’m like, no, there’s got to be a little more to it. That’ll be a little bit more to it than that. More than just you’re single. Love it. So do you work one on one? People, or is it mostly group settings? It’s both. So I believe in that hybrid model because I think that’s the most helpful. Sometimes you just need, like, mom, pay attention to me. And sometimes you’re like, oh, I want to learn from all my siblings. And that so I think I combine both of them, and then, yeah, they also have access to me, like, through Voxer. It’s like a voice actor app. So that way, if something comes up, like, they get an opportunity right away, and they can’t wait. Don’t want anything to get in the way of them booking that next gig or moving forward or responding to a request to book it’s. Like, if you have a question in mind, Box or me. Let’s get it figured out so you can move forward. It’s all about helping someone move forward quickly and being ready to say yes. Love it. Maybe when you’re working with somebody that really wants to level up and they have you one on one as a coach, is there any secret sauce, maybe, that you have, if you don’t mind sharing that? Maybe kind of identify that initial blind spot that they’re hitting? Yeah. So what we do is, in the first 30 days of the Speaker’s Training Academy, we do a get your talk ready to rock session. And what we do in there is this is where it’s like, man, it’s so powerful to have someone in your corner. And what I do is I am there. I call myself, like, the Talk Dula, the Talk Midwife, the Talk OBGYN, whoever you need me to be in that room, we’re going to get that talk delivered, right? And so I’m there. I’m listening. Not just listening to the words. I’m listening. I’m feeling what they’re feeling. I’m taking notes. Just like I can take notes while I’m listening and I’m in the flow, and we start to let the brilliance come out. And I think a lot of times, people, once they realize they’re a lot of times I’m sorry, I’m getting so excited. Are you good? A lot of times, I’ll repeat back to them some really cool thing they said, and they’re like, yeah, that’s it. That’s what I want to say. Oh, that’s brilliant. I’m like, well, you said that, and they don’t even realize that they said that. So I’m there to, like, catch like, I’m literally there catching the brilliance. Like, I’m I’m ready. Like, right. Let’s do it. And then all of a sudden, they’re like super in love with their talk and they can’t wait to get out there and share it because that’s the real juicy yummy stuff. Such a victory for you too. Like a proud mama moment, in a sense, across the board. I love that. So maybe if you’re still in the discovery time with somebody, you’re kind of working back and forth and getting their talk ready to rock and whatnot. But is there any good question that you wish they would ask you but never do? Oh, that’s such a great question. I can’t think of one right now, but I’m going to ponder on that one. You’re good. I’m not saying it to trip you off. It’s just if you’re looking at kind of a speaking coach, I would ask them, what would you see being a coach, you’re someone that obviously listens with your neck, not just your ears. You’re, like, really leaning into them. What kind of ultimate potential do you see? For me, especially if it comes to. Speaking. You know what I’m saying? Yeah. I think it’s the question that they actually have that they’re not asking is, can I do this? Is this worth anyone hearing? Does anyone want to hear my message? And so it’s not so much that they have to ask me that. I already know that they have that question in their mind. So it’s almost like they just need someone to validate just a little bit. Like, you got this, this is gold. Like, back to gold. You’re valuable. People need to hear what you have to hear. And I think that’s really comforting. And it’s not just your relatives, your family, of course they’re going to say you’re great, but you need someone who’s been around the block and sometimes we just need that external validation to keep moving us forward. Love it. That’s beautiful. Well, so well said. So what has been kind of like a failure, you’ve learned most from as you’re building this. Well, so interestingly. Math. I started a company a few years ago, and it was called Employee Management Consulting. And I had recently left a management position at a university and was sort of like, gosh, I want to be an entrepreneur, but I don’t know, what would that look like? And I realized, oh, I could teach people about management. And oh, my gosh. Scott I spent probably nearly $20,000 getting the company up. Up the website. The logo is perfect. I did recordings. I did videos. I wrote a book. I have coaching programs. I had flyers and talks, right? And all of it done. And then I realized, I like what I did, and I think it’s valuable. But I wasn’t excited to go out and get business. And so I paused for a minute, and I was like, like, okay, what do I really want to do? And it was right around that time when this gentleman to me, is it a failure? Don’t know, $20,000 like a business that you’re not going to. That kind of sucks, but like a little wake up call, right? And then it was right around that time I had sort of put pause on it, and I was on the phone with this guy who was in my speaker’s network, and he’s like, well, tell me about your speaking, coaching business. And I’m like, oh, I don’t have one, but thanks for asking. Kind of like and hung up and went home. And I thought I said, Lisa talking to myself, lisa, that is the last time you were ever going to say that. Got the URL that night. Getspeakinggicksnow.com. And I bought it, and I was like, boom, let’s go. I don’t believe in losing. I believe in winning and learning. And that was such like that gentleman planning that seed by asking that question. That’s fantastic. Isn’t it great that people in life are just out there that they’re doing they’re not even meaning to do it? A lot of times there’s that. Lesson. And that’s beautiful. So have you seen the movie Back to the Future? No, never heard of it. I’m like a year older than you. Let’s go back in that DeLorean with Marty McFly. Let’s go back to the 22 year old Lisa. What kind of knowledge nuggets would you drop in her? Not so much to change anything, Lisa, but maybe help her level through, blast up, shorten the learning curve just a little bit quicker, maybe. I remember at that time I read a book about a person who was a life coach, and at that time this is like the 90s. I’m like, what’s that? That’s cool. And I thought about becoming a life coach, and it wasn’t as popular as it is now. And I wish I had just gotten that certification back in the day when I was used to going to college, studying. Really cool. But I don’t know if I had a ton of life experience at that time, but I could have helped other people in college, maybe. Time. Yeah. And I put it away and then realize, of course, that’s what I don’t call myself a life coach, but certainly a coach. I call myself a lifestyle optimization artist. And I get introduced on stage like that, right. And they’ll have me and the MC or whoever it is that’s introduced me. They’ll say it. And I’m like, Listen, when you say the you kind of have to say it kind of snarkily, because then he follows up with it’s just a fancy word for a life coach. Right. So I go out there. My snick is I have a trampoline. I’m huge into rebounding. I think it’s the best thing you can do for your body on a trampoline. So I start all of my speeches on trampoline, and so I’m like, hey, if you’re one inch off this trampoline, you’re at zero gravity. You hit the trampoline, you’re at four times the gravity. It helps flush out your Lymph system so much. I’m a big believer in it. But the best part about it, Lisa, you’ll appreciate this is everybody’s head is doing what yeah. Because they’re watching you. They’re about to affirm everything. I’m talking afterwards. That’s a good tip. I like it. It’s fun. And I had to come up with something like that just because I’m six one, I’m 260, I’m pretty well put together, and I can come off when people first see me. It’s like a bully, right? And I just have to short, kind of slow it down. It’s just kind of my way. Plus, it really helps get that anxiety out while I’m starting, so it’s beautiful. So let me ask something. How does you want your dash remembered? How about that little line in between your incarnation date and your expiration date, your life date and death? Hopefully it’s way down the road, but how do you want your dash remembered? One of my missions that always is with me, no matter what I’m doing, is really to raise the higher consciousness of our entire planet. And I believe that we all have gifts, and when we are really giving our unique gifts to others, that is all of us raising the higher consciousness of the planet. Wow. So. All that. That’s all? Wow. That’s not much. I’m kidding. That’s awesome. So where did that kind of come from? Where did that stem from? The want really to I understand. You take care of yourself. You’re a beautiful lady. You’re genuine and whatnot, but where did the really go giver mentality kind of come from? Definitely from my dad. My dad. I was raised with my dad as a hypnotherapist. Really? We were? Yeah, up in Alaska. Fairbanks, Alaska. And he was really inspirational, not just to me, but to many people. And he was studying, like, really deep stuff, and we would have really cool, deep conversations just around the family dinner table. Neuro linguistic programming. Oh, my God. Cyclo fibernetics. Thank you. That was ironic. And general semantics and stuff like that. So you’re just always have. These really cool, deep conversations and consciousness and things like that. Love that I don’t know, just love that marinated in it. I was blessed to have, actually, a session with Paul McKenna. He wrote I can make you all the books. I can make you rich. I can make you sleep. And he’s a psycho or the hypnotist dude. And I literally hypnotize myself through his stuff every night because it really just keeps gratitude flowing from me and helps me to give give until it hurts. So good. But also be open to the karmic debt and reciprocation that is coming back to me. So that’s fantastic. So what do you think people maybe misunderstand the most about you? Probably that what do they misunderstand about me? Maybe because I live in Orange County now, and I like my red lipstick and I like my gold heels. They may not realize how tough I am growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I’ve dug myself out in ditches. I’ve had in the ice, in the snow. The beautiful Tom girl. She got to be right. Love that hammer. All the things I love your confidence. It exudes. I can’t wait to meet you in the flesh because you just have this and I know that you level people up through that and that’s just beautiful. What is then your definition of a life well lived? I think being who you’re meant to be. Listening to your wisdom of your soul. Saying yes when you really mean yes. Saying no when you really mean no. That’s beautiful. That is fantastic. And squad, we’re going to take my good friend Lisa through our leveling up lightning round just as soon as we get back from thanking our sponsors and affiliates. Time to shine. Today podcast. Varsity squad, we are back at least said this won’t be the last time we chat. I promise you. I’ll have referrals for you and I actually want to give you a big midwestern I’m from Detroit. Big Midwestern hug sometime and just really pick. Your brain also as well. But we probably sit and talk about some of these questions, probably for 15, 20 minutes. But today, you’ve have 5 seconds to answer them with no explanations, and they can all be answered that way. Love you ready to level up? Do it. Yes. Do it. Lisa, what is the best leveling up advice you’ve ever received? Be you sure one of your personal habits that can chew it to your success? Spiritual rituals. Every morning you see me walking down the street and you’re like, man, fergie looks like he’s in his doldrum saying he needs to be leveled up. What book might you hand me? It’s not your money. By Tosha Silver yes believe it. I have that. What’s your most commonly used emoji when you text? Probably the the little face with the stars. Love it. Nicknames grown up. Sparkles. Sparkles. All right. And. Give me a hidden talent and or superpower that you have that really no one knows about. I can go like us. That is cool. I can move my ears to the point where you can actually see the things moving. Yeah. Sorry if you’re only listening. Audio losers. Okay. Chest checkers are Monopoly. Oh, none of those beautiful cards. Cards. Okay. Got you. Headline for your life. She was glowing. Love it. So go to ice cream flavor. I knew you were going to ask me this. It’s got to be two mint chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate from Baskin Robbins together. Definitely hang out sometime. So there’s a sandwich called the Sparklease Build. That a sandwich for me. Oh, it’s got brie. It’s got bacon. Got to have bacon. Got to have bacon. Roast beef, probably some mayonnaise and dijon and sourdough bread. I got to get you over here to Florida, man, because we’re wide open and it’s like convention central here and you can get speaking to you. You could probably pick up clients all day. Got to get you over here and enjoy one of those sandwiches. So how about a favorite charity and organization like to give your time or money to working wardrobes, which is an opportunity to help people level up and be ready to get jobs. And they help people with their interview clothes and skills. It’s called working wardrobe. Working wardrobes. Yeah. Did you hear that? Put that in the show notes, please. Thank you. Awesome. And last question. You can elaborate on this one a little bit, but what is the best decade of music? Sixty s, seventy s, eighty s or 90s. Well, 80s for sure, and I like all the other ones, too. But yeah, 80s is my go to when I need a little bopping. And I love 80s bands. I had an 80s band at my wedding. You better have said eighty S. I know. Can. Did you graduate? Around 91? Yep, 91. I was 90. So it’s like, you know, we had the we had everything in the 80s. Like, people don’t understand. We had big hair. Don’t care. Right. You know, you had the glam rock. You had the metal rock. You had love it rapid. Like beastie boys, right? Yeah. Like, you had the invasions from you two and duran duran, and we had the pesh mode, and we had donna, all these different kinds of things. So amazing. Yeah. It’s awesome. Now, songs these days, if you listen to anything by pit bull or flow rider, it has the hooks from 80s songs. It’s beautiful. Yeah. We can definitely be busty. So, lisa, how can we find you love? You can go to getspeakinggigsnow.com that’s getspeaking gigs with the s because you want more than one now. Because you want them now. Love it. And is there anything that you kind of have that may be free or something that people can kind of take a look at to dip their feet in before we really make the intro? Yeah, if you go to getspeakinggigsnow. Com, you can find five top tips to get more speaking gigs. Right there. Just boom. Fill it out, grab it, get it. Let’s talk about your book. Get speaking gigs now. Oh, what? Yes, I have a book. I have audio version, too. So if it’s on Audible, if you’re listening to this podcast on the audio version, you might want to grab the book, too. Yes. It’s called get speaking gigs now. But where the whole premise? I mean, it’s kind of back. So what you really talk about and whatnot but what can people expect out of that other than getting speaking gigs? Yeah, so what I do is it’s kind of like a workbook, honestly. It covers the seven key areas. When people ask me at the beginning, like, well, how do I get speaking gigs? I’m like, well, it’s a few things, but when I really distilled it down, it was these seven key areas. And people just think like, oh, all I need is and just someone to say yes. I’m like, well, no, it’s a little bit more than that, because you want to not just get the gig, you want to be successful. So it covers the seven keys to help you just really kind of get started. Love it. Squad, if you are somebody that’s inspired to speak or, you know, somebody that really wants to get it and launch your speaking gig, please go and buy it. It’ll be in the show notes. But also I’m going to do a five book giveaway. That the first five people that put in gig. Me. Gigme. G-I-G-M-E-I don’t care if it’s pinterest instagram, if you text it 561-40-3830. I will personally purchase five books from my good friend Lisa here, because if you’re looking to level up your speaking and get those gigs and that’s plural gigs, then definitely you want to pick up this book. And Lisa, do me one last solid and leave us with one last knowledge nugget we can take with us internalize and take action on. I would say ignorance on fire is better than perfection on ice any day of a week. It’s better than perfection on ice? Yeah. Meaning, like, you’re just sitting there not doing anything. You’re frozen because you’re thinking, it’s got to be perfect. Go for it. Just do it. I love that. And Squad, we just had, like, a really fun conversation and kind of a free master class from my good friend Lisa Reid here. She was there, and she started really kind of filling a gap with people that have a message that they desire to share, but they just don’t know how to get it out there. At least to fill that gap, she provides a service where she comes from a place of heart and not just a money grab. Like, she really her company really cares about your success. Cess she’ll help you find that speaker’s kryptonite and blast through it. She’ll help somebody get ready to say yes. With lower resistance, increased confidence, and certainty. She actually kind of used a metaphor of linking arms to strategize to help you level up your business. Business, to her is kind of like a deck of cards where you can play 30, 40 different games with a deck of cards and each speaking event. I’ll tell you what, I’ve never had over 400 speaking events that I’ve did, that I’ve spoke at. None of them were the same. It was like a different game at each one. And that’s what I absolutely love. There’s no monotony in speaking. It’s awesome. She wants you to get your talk ready to rock, and when she does that and she starts working with you, or if she’s a group of people, she really listens with her neck to help that brilliance come out of you and ask your speaking coach, can I do this? What do you see? Why do you think that I can do this? What makes the gold standard for you? And she wants you to really raise your higher consciousness of herself and of the planet to give your unique gift to others. I mean, my friend here is planting trees that she’s never going to sit in the shade of. I absolutely love her. And she’s doing it really because she rocks stages, but she’s more about you rocking the stage. She does it for the intention instead of the attention. I absolutely love this lady. You know, she wants you to be who you’re meant to be and listen to the wisdom of your own soul. And lastly, she blew me away with ignorance on fire is better than perfection on ice. So just get busy doing. Get busy living. That’s what my friend Lisa does. She levels up her health. She levels up her wealth. She’s beautiful, hungry, humble. She’s earned a varsity squad letter here at time to send today. Thank you so much for coming on. Lisa, I love your guts, and I cannot wait to collaborate with you. Thank you, Cat. Soon. I know.
