The Desire To Be Great

The Desire to be great and my journey

Everyone has a desire to be important or a desire to be great.

Okay, this is a pretty easy one for me to write. Why? Because I lived it in a ‘bad’ way in the past.  It was a drug to me a complete addiction. Looking back at the way I acted, I wanted to punch my own self in the face.  I was arrogant, cocky (well those are one in the same) and was wondering why nobody wanted to be around me.

In retrospect I can see why all the above happened to me.  I have not fully cured myself of this ‘disease’ but I have control over it now.  How did I do it? I got out of my own way and started serving people.

I did not come up with this ‘cure’ on my own.  There were two people in my life who were not close friends and they basically asked how ‘life’ was.  With not having too much attachment to them I was more open and spilled my feelings. I said I wanted to be great but maybe I’m trying to hard.  One to the two said ‘stop being an asshole and just watch what happens’ The other who became a lifelong mentor of mine (we will call him Sam as he is a very private person). Said ‘start serving, surround yourself with people you want to be like, hire a coach and read 100 pages a day of information that will help you ‘level up’.

At coffee one day he handed me two books.  Prosperity Mind by Randy Gage and The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews.  I literally read both of them in one day. They hit home with how to take a step back from myself and really tune into the present. To view everything in life as a gift and believe good things will happen for me.

Next step I hired a coach and he gave me mental and physical exercises every morning to feed my mind and body.  That was 2009 and I do them every day.

The mind-blowing part of this is that I didn’t even consciously notice, but I was getting invited to events, being asked to speak and teach and made some outstanding friends.

Fast forward a couple years I attended a networking meeting where Bob Burg spoke. (if you have never heard of him.  Google him and pick up the Book The Go-Giver. The first law of Stratospheric Success is the Law of Value ‘Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment’.

‘Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment’.

– Pinder from The Go-Giver by Bob Burg

This went back to Sam’s first piece of advice. ‘Start Serving’.  Since then I look for every chance to serve. I give back to Veterans and Local Heroes here in South Florida, Operation 300 for children that lost their Dad’s in battle (being a Veteran myself) this hits home with me. And also the Reaching Higher program.

Now I wouldn’t say that I’ve become ‘great’ through these experiences.  But it sure the hell does make feel feel amazing and to myself now I feel important.  And to me that’s what matters.

Here is a quick knowledge nugget video that I put together with my thoughts.

I’d love to know your thoughts! And also any tips you could share with me on how I could keep leveling up my daily game! Put a comment below or drop us a line directly sf@timetoshinetoday.com
