What happens when you’ve spent so much time performing, producing, achieving, and being who everyone else needs you to be that you no longer recognize yourself? In this week’s Knowledge Nugget, Coach Fergie shares a powerful coaching conversation with a successful hedge fund financial analyst who realized he couldn’t remember the last time he did something simply because it made him happy. Discover why you may not need to “find yourself” at all—and how small, intentional choices can help you stop abandoning yourself and start coming back to who you really are.
3 Actionable Take-Aways
- Pay attention to the small moments you abandon yourself. Every unnecessary “yes,” ignored boundary, or decision made simply to keep someone else comfortable can slowly pull you away from who you are. 🪞
- Ask yourself, “What do I want?” Strip away what your boss, family, friends, or the world expects from you and start rebuilding the habit of listening to your own voice. 🎯
- Do something with absolutely no agenda. Not everything needs to improve you, make money, produce results, or prove something. Make room for something that brings you joy simply because you’re alive. 🙌

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “I don’t even know who I am anymore?” Not because your life is falling apart, not because you’re failing, but because somewhere along the way, you stopped feeling like you. We’ll call him Mark. On paper, Mark had everything most people are chasing, great career, excellent income, respected by leadership, healthy, driven, disciplined. Then he said something that really completely changed our conversation. He said, “Fergie, I don’t even know what I enjoy anymore.”
That sentence wasn’t about work. It wasn’t about money. It wasn’t even about burnout. It was about identity. As we kept talking, I realized what had happened. Every decision in his life had become about performance. Every book had to make him better.
Every workout had to improve him. Every conversation needed a purpose. Even vacations became another goal to maximize. So I asked him one simple question, “Mark, [00:01:00] when was the last time you did something simply ’cause it made you smile?” He couldn’t answer, And that’s when I told him something I want you to hear today.
You didn’t lose yourself, you slowly left yourself. Every time you ignored your own needs, every time you stayed quiet to keep someone else comfortable, every time you told yourself, “I’ll get back to me later.” Those little compromises added up.
Here’s this week’s coaching nugget. You don’t find yourself, you stop abandoning yourself. So here’s your challenge. First, pay attention to small moments where you betray yourself by saying yes when you really mean no. Second, ask yourself one question every day, “What do I want?” Not what everyone else wants.
What do you want? And finally, do one thing this week that has absolutely no agenda except bringing you joy. No productivity, no performance, no proving, just living. Because the greatest comeback you may ever make isn’t in your career, it isn’t in your finances, it’s coming back to yourself. And if you’re finding yourself not coming back to yourself and you wanna have a free complimentary hour of [00:02:00] power and we kinda work through it and shine a light on that blind spot, then give me a call.
