Coach Fergie:  Your best employee’s exhausted. Now what? Squad, somebody on your team just gave you a sixty-hour week. They stayed late, handled the changes, delivered for you. Then you catch a mistake. You know it needs attention. You also know that the person who made it is running on fumes. How do you hold the standard without making them feel like nothing they do is ever enough?
So let’s put you inside the coaching session I had with a CFO. So picture this. A female CFO at a Fortune one hundred company, her team just pushed through a demanding reporting week. <READ MORE>

One of her strongest people turns in a report with a number that needs correcting. In that coaching conversation, here’s the question I’d want us working through: “Fergie, if I let this slide, what message am I sending?” And I asked her,, does this need correcting right now, or do you need relief from the discomfort of seeing it?”

Ooh, that took some honesty because sometimes we walk into that conversation carrying more frustration than direction. So here’s three moves. First, fix what cannot wait. If that number could affect a decision, get it [00:01:00] verified before the report goes out. Keep it specific. “This figure needs another look.

Let’s verify it before we send it.” You’re addressing an error. Keep the conversation focused there. Second, put the bigger conversation on the calendar. Don’t unload an entire performance review on somebody who can barely process another sentence. Say, “Hey, I appreciate what you carried this week. Monday morning, let’s look at how this happened and what we need to change.”

Their effort goes recognized. The issue gets addressed. Nobody has to guess what happens next.

Leaders, we’ve got to do our own part too. . Then agree on one change, who owns it, and when you’ll follow up. So here’s your knowledge nugget. Hold the standard, choose the moment, make the next step clear. Before your next correction, ask yourself, “What do I want this person to do better after we talk?”

Give them feedback that you can use and a fair opportunity to use it. The squad, that’s how you help people level up. And I’m, I know that I deal with some of my employees that, might need a little bit of [00:02:00] help, need a little bit of correction, but with my help and my coaches, I’ve really slowed my roll and got it done with them, okay?

And put it out to them where they still felt part of a team and not like I was trying to, , really push them down. And if you might be a leader who’s dealing with the same thing and you’re not knowing how to handle it, then let’s set up an Hour of Power. It’s complimentary, where we just talk and maybe shine a light on that blind spot to help you level up your team.
