Why do the people you love sometimes get the patience you have left instead of the kindness they deserve? In this week’s Knowledge Nugget, Coach Fergie draws on his years coaching a baseball player from the minors to the majors to illustrate how work frustrations can follow us home. Discover three practical ways to recognize stress earlier, reconnect with your family, and back your apologies with changes your loved ones can feel.
3 Actionable Take-Aways
- Catch the frustration before it comes out sideways. Before leaving work, ask, “What am I still carrying?” Notice your tight jaw, short answers, or replayed conversations so you can address the buildup before it affects your family. 🔍
- Create a transition before you reconnect. Take a short walk, put your phone away, or spend a few minutes decompressing in your car. Communicate what you need, agree on a reset, and return when you promised. 🚪
- Give your apology a follow-through. Own your tone without excuses, then make a change your family can experience—a calmer greeting, your phone away at dinner, or your full attention when they speak. Your loved ones weren’t the opponent. 🤝

Coach Fergie: [00:00:00] Does your family brace themselves when you walk in? Let me ask you something.
How much patience did you give strangers today that the people you love never got? You handled the demanding client, kept your cool in that meeting, then you come home, somebody asks a simple question, and your tone changed for the whole room. You saw their face and you knew. I’m Coach Fergie with Time To Shine Today Coaching, and let’s unpack a little bit of something ar-around this. <READ MORE>

Now, I’ve coached a Major League Baseball player for years now. Had him when he was in the minors, and now he’s in the show, right? Keeping his private conversations private, but picture this, a rough night at the plate, an opportunity missed, and an at-bat he keeps replaying.
He changes clothes, leaves the ballpark, gets home, but in his head, he’s still facing that pitcher. Someone he loves wants a little connection, and it lands like another demand. You don’t need a uniform to bring that game home. Your ballpark might be business, an office, or a job site. . And listen, your pressure is real. You deserve some room to decompress. Your [00:01:00] family deserves kindness while you do it. Both can be true. Here are three things to practice. First, catch it earlier. If you only notice your frustration after you snap, move your check-in back. Before you leave work, ask, “What am I still carrying?” .. Notice that tight jaw, those short answers, that conversation you keep replaying.
Name it before it comes out sideways. Second, build a transition. Take a short walk, put the phone away, , or do like I do. I kinda sit in my car and decompress before I head into the family. Tell your family, “I’m glad to see you. Give me 10 minutes to settle down, and then I wanna hear all about your day.” Agree on what works and come back when you promised. Third, give your apology a follow-through. “I was sharp with you. You didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry.” Then change something they can actually experience, a calmer greeting, your phone away at the dinner, your attention when they speak.
. So here’s your coaching knowledge nugget. Your family doesn’t need you to come home with a perfect day behind you. They need you to remember they weren’t the opponent. Tonight, pause at [00:02:00] the door, decide how you want your people to feel when they see you, and
then let your words first show it. And I’ve dealt with this squad. I’ve dealt with bad days, but when I come home, it’s not fair to my family to hear about all the bad days, right? And to take any of it out on them. It’s just not fair to them.
. And if that’s happening to you, let’s set up an hour of power and see if we can shine the light on that blind spot to help you decompress before you go and take anything out on your family.
