Have you ever felt like you’ve lost trust in your own judgment? In this week’s Knowledge Nugget, Coach Fergie explores the difference between confidence and self-trust through a powerful coaching conversation with a minor league baseball player who realized his biggest opponent wasn’t standing on the mound—it was the doubt in his own mind. Learn why constantly seeking validation weakens your instincts and discover practical ways to rebuild trust in yourself, one decision at a time.
3 Actionable Take-Aways
- Keep the promises you make to yourself. Self-trust isn’t built overnight—it’s earned every time your actions match your word, no matter how small the commitment. 💪
- Stop looking for everyone else’s approval before making your next move. Seek wisdom when needed, but don’t let outside opinions become louder than your own inner voice. 🧠
- Measure success by your courage to decide, not by perfect outcomes. Trust yourself to adapt, learn, and grow regardless of how things unfold. 🚀

Coach Fergie: [00:00:00] What if the biggest person you’ve stopped believing in is yourself? Welcome back to another three-minute Knowledge Nugget. I’m Coach Fergie with Time to Shine Today Coaching. Let me ask you, how many opportunities have you missed, not because you weren’t talented, not because you weren’t prepared, but because you stopped trusting yourself?
I see this quite often in my coaching. People tell me, “Coach Fergie, I just need more confidence.” No, I don’t think you do. I think you just need to trust yourself again. There’s a huge difference. Confidence says, “I can do this.” Self-trust says, “Even if this doesn’t go my way, I’ll figure it out.” That mindset changes everything. <<READ MORE>>

This week, I had the privilege of coaching a minor league baseball player. We’ll just call him James. James has the talent. He has the work ethic. He has earned every opportunity in front of him. But somewhere along the way, he stopped trusting himself. Every at-bat became an internal argument.
Every swing came with hesitation. Every strikeout sent him searching for another answer, another opinion, another adjustment, another reason why things weren’t working. Finally, I looked at him and asked one question. Said, “Hey, Jay, when was the last time you trusted your preparation instead of searching for another opinion?”[00:01:00]
He didn’t answer right away because he knew. His problem wasn’t mechanics. It wasn’t talent. It wasn’t even confidence. He had stopped believing in the person standing in the batter’s box. And here’s what I’ve learned. That’s not just a baseball problem. That’s a life problem. Entrepreneurs do it.
Executives do it. Parents do it. Maybe you’re doing it. Every time you ignore your instincts because you’re waiting for someone else to validate your decision, you send yourself a message, “I don’t trust you.” Do that long enough, and eventually you’ll believe it. So here’s this week’s coaching nugget. Stop measuring yourself by whether every decision works out perfectly.
Start measuring yourself by whether you had the courage to make the best decision you could, and trust yourself to handle whatever comes next. Because confidence comes and goes, but self-trust, that’s built every time you keep a promise to yourself. So if you’re feeling yourself not trusting yourself or l- looking to validation from other people, then give me a call, and maybe we can work through it with a complimentary Hour of Power.
