Have you ever felt guilty because you’re outgrowing the people around you? In this week’s Knowledge Nugget, Coach Fergie shares a powerful coaching story about a Vice President of a successful financial advisory firm who found himself wrestling with the tension between gratitude and growth. Discover why personal growth often changes your circle, how to stop confusing guilt with gratitude, and three practical coaching strategies to continue becoming who you’re meant to be—without shrinking yourself to make others comfortable.
3 Actionable Take-Aways
- Honor your past, but don’t live in it. Appreciate the people and experiences that helped shape you, but don’t let yesterday keep you from the person you’re becoming. 🌱
- Surround yourself with people who stretch your thinking. Growth accelerates when you’re in rooms that challenge your mindset instead of simply validating your comfort. 🚀
- Stop explaining your growth. You can love, respect, and pray for people without feeling obligated to stay where they are. Keep showing up and keep growing. 🧭

Coach Fergie: [00:00:00] growing doesn’t hurt. Feeling guilty about growing does. Have you ever felt guilty because you’re outgrowing the people around you? Welcome to this week’s three-minute coaching knowledge nugget. I’m Coach Fergie with Time To Shine Today Coaching. This week I had a coaching session with the vice president of a successful advisory firm.
On paper, he’s crushing it. He’s leading a team, providing for his family, growing professionally, doing all the things most people say they want. But then he said something that stopped me. He said, “Coach Fergie, I almost feel guilty.” I asked, “About what?” He said, “I don’t dislike my friends. <<READ MORE>>

They’re good people, but our conversations haven’t changed in years. My priorities have changed.
I leave feeling drained instead of inspired, and then I feel guilty for feeling that way.” Man, I know a lot of people needed to hear that. Listen, growth has a funny way of changing your circle. Not because you’re better, because you’re different. Maybe you’re reading more, maybe you’re protecting your mornings, maybe you’re taking care of your health, maybe you’re chasing a dream everyone else thinks is crazy.
That doesn’t make you arrogant, it means you’re growing. Here’s where we get stuck. We confuse gratitude with guilt. Be grateful for the people who have helped shape your journey,
. But [00:01:00] don’t feel guilty for becoming who God created you to become. Those are two completely different things. Here’s your coaching nugget. Stop asking yourself, “Who am I leaving behind?” Start asking yourself, “Who am I becoming?”
That one question shifts everything. So here’s your challenge this week. Number one, honor your past, but don’t live in it. Number two, put yourself around people who stretch your thinking instead of simply validating your effort. And number three, stop explaining your growth to people who have already decided to stay where they are.
Just keep showing up, just keep growing. Remember, you can love people, respect people, pray for people without shrinking yourself to make everyone else comfortable. So if you’re dealing with this kind of, ah, situation where people just aren’t leveling you up or you feel like you’re outgrowing, again, don’t cut them off.
Just love on them from afar if you have to. And if you’re having issues or challenges with this, let’s sit down for a free complimentary Hour of Power. Call me at 248-739-6362. Again, 248-739-6362, or go to[00:02:00]
