Unknown Speaker 1:17
Hey, time to shine varsity squad is Scott Ferguson and I got a awesome treat for you today. I got my brother, Adam Byrd from heroes Media Group. And one thing that everybody that kind of listens to the podcast knows that I’m a veteran. Did my time, if you will, between 1990 and 1995 in the military overseas quite a bit in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq. And what I have here with my good friend now Adam Byrd is he is one of the founders of heroes Media Group, and they really step up and they provide phenomenal programs to help my fellow veterans level up. And everything from book publishing audio visual transcriptions, audio visual editing, podcast production, social media content, marketing strategies, and services. And he just has a whole kind of a one stop shop for veterans that want to get their voice heard. And he’s fantastic. And Adam is the founder and chief executive officer of hears Media Group. He’s an experienced entrepreneur and leader in building companies educating training and mentoring and empowering teams to success. Huge credentials from my friend. Welcome to the show, Adam, if you could come on Introduce yourself real quick. Say hi to the squad. The first what is your favorite color? And why blue?
Unknown Speaker 2:44
Why peaceful?
Unknown Speaker 2:46
Yeah, I have this thing right here. It’s called the Atlantic Ocean and it’s only thing is the beach Nazis really won’t let aside because they’re listening to this now. It might be over with by the time or we’re coming out of the But I think we’re about like, de 9260 Yeah, or something in our stuff and Adams graced me with some time to come on here and drop some solid knowledge nuggets on everybody. So and give me the origins. Let’s take it back to the military days and how you roll forward into starting heroes Media Group. Well, I appreciate it, man. Thanks for having me on. So I
Unknown Speaker 3:22
got the like, I joined the National Guard, right. When I got out of high school, did a year of college ran out of money. It was like oh, man, uh, you know, I guess this military thing might work. But I didn’t want to do like the every day yes or no sir. Yes, ma’am. No, ma’am thing at the time. My mindset was, I kind of want the best of both worlds. So I joined the National Guard with basic and came back and did several, you know, my backgrounds, more business marketing and education. And then throughout the years, I landed a few fortune 500 company needs that I’ve worked for moved up pretty quickly in those companies and then around 2013 were fast forward. So I joined the military 98 got out in oh seven, and around 2013. I was, it was April 1, it was April Fool’s Day, I walked into the corporate job. And I said, Yeah, quit and turn around. And I’ve never done that before. I’m usually pretty professional. And it’s not something that I’m necessarily proud of. But it was at the time there was so many months of just build up and it was time for me to to just do my own thing. And I’d started a company similar to heroes Media Group at the time. Had a had a partner at the time and ran that for about three years, three and a half years and then we separated when our own ways. Next day file paperwork for heroes Media Group, and then
Unknown Speaker 4:51
that will be five years.
Unknown Speaker 4:54
This September, September 2020. will be our five year anniversary for here’s what was
Unknown Speaker 4:59
that aha moment that like, Man, I’m just gonna walk in leave make this a lot a lot of it was I was.
Unknown Speaker 5:05
So the job that I was at at the time I was working for a university. And prior to that anybody, you know, for about five years, I worked for a big university, online school who will remain nameless, right. But I was kind of one of the bigwigs in their military division there, and everybody at this new university knew who I was. So I walked in, they were like, Oh, he’s gonna move up. And but I didn’t want to be in management. I don’t want to do any of that stuff. I just show up, do my job and leave, kinda like take the easy route, I guess you could say, Sure. My manager knew all of that. So we took advantage of it. And we have like these one on ones with me, you know, and for a while, it’d be on a bi weekly basis, and then the very next day, we’d have a team meeting, and he went over everything that I told him to go over and how to do the next day. I was like, you know, this is, this is bullshit, you’re fine. Anything Oh yeah, this is like I’m not not doing this. So I started showing up late, I was taking extra lunches, like I literally was getting away with murder. And nobody was and I was they weren’t, you know, holding any discipline towards me because I was in the top 3% of the entire company, right moments and stuff. So I just said, you know, I’m, I’m done with this and, and my, my son, my son is my biggest motivator. I was I was a single parent for 15 years. My my son was the kind of the driving force. I didn’t want to have to ask somebody permission to go to my son’s football game or to a school event or anything, right. So I was just like,
Unknown Speaker 6:42
you already did like nine years of, we call time when we’re in sometimes it’s a love hate relationship in the military, right? Well, yeah, yeah. It’s like drop the hat. We got to go. Yeah, so it must have felt pretty nice to be able to walk into someplace and be like later because you never do that even though as much as we both feel that we hold ourselves to a higher level of perfect right? felt really good. And you did it for the right reasons, right?
Unknown Speaker 7:04
I know I did it for the right reasons. But the very next day I was like, Oh gosh, like what did I do? Right? Because I had no plan. I was doing my side hustle as a part time thing on the weekends. And I was just like, well, I guess I guess the side hustle just became the full time and I haven’t looked back you know, and it’s been it’s been I’ve been blessed. I’ve been
Unknown Speaker 7:29
and what did your family think about that kind of walking away from this and, and then walking, wrapping up here?
Unknown Speaker 7:36
Uh, you know, at first they were just like, you know, yeah, maybe maybe you should have
Unknown Speaker 7:42
talked to us about I don’t know what the hell I need to talk to you about for
Unknown Speaker 7:44
I don’t need to prove I’m a grown ass man. Like I do my own. Right.
Unknown Speaker 7:47
Right.
Unknown Speaker 7:48
Well, then you’re just gonna have to suffer through it and I and I did it for the longest time there was the support system, in my opinion was somewhat questionable if they were they were there. And you know, and honestly Got a couple years into even heroes Media Group, there was a time where I was like, You know what? I’m gonna quit this and just go back to corporate America because, okay, well yeah, it was one of those kind of whoa is me. You know, I’m human, you have those male males have it. So I love telling the story. I went to my my dad.
Unknown Speaker 8:18
And he’s very,
Unknown Speaker 8:20
like, go get a job work at 30 years retire. No travel die kind of thing. Right, right. He’s very old school. So I’m thinking like, I’m gonna go to my dad. I’ll tell him how I’m feeling because I know he’s going to tell me you should just go back to corporate go
Unknown Speaker 8:35
back to that safety.
Unknown Speaker 8:36
I will never forget we’re sitting at the bar. We’re having a drink. And I look at him as I’m thinking about just quitting everything, shutting it down and just going back to corporate America, and he just like really? I said, Yeah, I was like, What do you think? He’s like, I think that’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. That’d be that’d be a horrible mistake.
Unknown Speaker 8:54
Wow. What time were you
Unknown Speaker 8:59
like, he’s a you’re onto something. And he’s like, and me and your mom see that you’re happy and that you’re doing something special. He said, honestly, I think you’d be making big like complete one a what I what I was expecting. And that was actually really kind of a big kind of kick in the pants to really keep it going. Like if my dad, who’s I always was kind of hard to please. Growing up. If he believed in what I was doing, then I knew I was onto something special huge.
Unknown Speaker 9:28
Yeah, he’s wanting to like protect you but kind of scrutinize every move that you make while you feeling is protecting you. But he gave you the green light. And he wasn’t like, let’s
Unknown Speaker 9:37
go. He was a dude, he’s no, you’re not doing that. You can’t do that.
Unknown Speaker 9:41
What his heroes Media Group do to really help people level up.
Unknown Speaker 9:46
So here’s the thing. Here’s the concept. Here’s me. First off, we had to define heroes, heroes, our heroes and heroes in the community, right military veterans, firefighters, first responders,
Unknown Speaker 9:58
edgy educators.
Unknown Speaker 10:00
Because teachers they don’t get the respect that they deserve. And then there’s a clear GPS. Now, if you don’t believe in God or not, we don’t hold that against you, that’s fine universe, whatever. But for me personally, I grew up going to church. So that’s, I threw that in neck and do that
Unknown Speaker 10:13
because I own the company, right?
Unknown Speaker 10:16
Um, we wanted to create a positive environment. I think a lot of people would agree that you can go on turn on your TV, turn your radio, terrestrial radio in your car, and you get a lot of negativity. We want to pause I want to hear the positive stories. Let’s Let’s hear the positive stories. And that’s kind of how it started. It started off as a podcasting platform. I brought in three, four shows from the old platform onto this, we went from three four shows we’re up to somewhere around 40 now and then we got in the transcription for podcasters. And we got other clients doing that. But ultimately the goal be, I want to change how media is delivered and how its consumed.
Unknown Speaker 10:58
Okay.
Unknown Speaker 11:00
Not necessarily changed, like what we’re doing right now, like you and I, on the computer or anything like that. I want to change the message behind it, I get the bad things happen. And that stuff’s got to be reported. But what you’re not seeing when 90% of the media is reporting on negative stuff, through through us a blip throws a positive story in there, right? Like, every
Unknown Speaker 11:26
five stories, throw a good one in there for crying out loud.
Unknown Speaker 11:28
Like you actually wait till the very end. Yeah, notice and then
Unknown Speaker 11:32
you just, oh my god, you’re like, do I? Why is everybody drinking all of a sudden? I don’t know.
Unknown Speaker 11:39
Gotcha. So what what do you think would make a great leader then?
Unknown Speaker 11:45
Oh, man, great question. I think a great leader is not only somebody that can show people what the ultimate mission or what the goal is, but a great leaders got to be able to listen to their people as well and build them You know, a friend of mine kind of recently gave me a an analogy of, you know, you see you think of a leader, if you compare it to like a pyramid, usually the leaders on top looking down on everybody else and look at it, like the guy that’s got the world on his back, like he’s holding everybody up. You know, I think a leader kind of holds everybody up, you know, and as as a leader, it’s your job to make everybody better so they can proceed and move forward with the things that they wanted a
Unknown Speaker 12:29
pyramid should be the leader on the bottom, the foundation almost right. As you’re walking, people want to kind of like race to the bottom. And it’s like some might say, yeah, so what kind of during this you kind of alluded to some stuff where you just didn’t really feel like doing any more, but is there any other like maybe even in your whole life, any fail that you might have came across where you failed forward, where you push through whether you need to get help or not? Is there anything that you want to share with how you can level up because my listeners like to hear this, you know, I mean
Unknown Speaker 13:00
you know what it was my history I quit everything in high school and everything like that so the really the first time that I that I six that I consider where I actually succeeded was in the military going through boot camp and and like doing it because that was like one of those like, I’m not gonna, you see people are like, Oh my god, I just want to get out and they and then you know don’t make it a week I made it through the whole thing so for me that would be conferencing, the the level up or what I call my leap of faith happened April 1 2013 is when I decided to quit corporate america and i and i went full bore and I believed in myself that was a fail because I didn’t I look at it as a failure because I was not set up I didn’t have any money in the bank. I didn’t like this was I didn’t plan this out. I just walked woke up that morning was like done. And I you know and then it was just like how do I get client some stain, some didn’t. You just end you in
Unknown Speaker 14:00
I’ve tried to fail as often as I could moving forward. So
Unknown Speaker 14:03
like, there you go.
Unknown Speaker 14:04
Yeah. As fast as I can, and I Lenny learn from those mistakes.
Unknown Speaker 14:08
I love that. I love that. So let’s get into our DeLorean with Marty McFly. right we’re cruising back in time. Yeah, we meet up with that 22 year old Adam Berg. What kind of knowledge nuggets you drop it on him.
Unknown Speaker 14:24
Man have first off have faith. You know, believe in yourself, have faith and learn as much as you possibly can. I was not a strong I had a learning disability growing up so I was not a strong I couldn’t read and comprehend. So I would have to either do or listen. Like I listened to a lot of audiobooks. Sure. Um, at that time in my life, it was all about going out partying and doing whatever. If I could go back I would I would learn another language I would learn a different skill set. I would continue to learn as much as you possibly can never stop learning. And more importantly, if you are doing something, or you have a goal
Unknown Speaker 15:12
at 22 years old and have a goal,
Unknown Speaker 15:14
first, have a goal, have a purpose, let me rephrase that have a purpose. And don’t chase the dollar. Money is cool to have and it’s great when the bills are around you if you chase the dollar, because that’s all that’s important to you, you’re gonna chase the dollar the rest of your life haven’t have a purpose. That means something to you. Because if you have that purpose, profit will always follow
Unknown Speaker 15:36
that beautiful. Yeah, well, very well said um, even during this time, this COVID things a great equalizer, right? It’s like you can have bank. Yep, still aren’t going and someone’s not asking you how you want your steak prepared and bring it to your table. It doesn’t matter. That’s a great I love that learning. Ask never stop learning. Have faith and be yourself. That’s fantastic. So you’ve accomplished you went through different kind of phases of your life. You’ve accomplished a lot more What’s the big thing? Big, big thing that Adam wants to accomplish?
Unknown Speaker 16:06
You know what it?
Unknown Speaker 16:09
It’s, it’s a hard question for me to answer. Let me tell you why. I’m the type of guy that sets unrealistic goals. Meaning and the reason why it’s like the goal that I have set right now is just is to turn this company into a billion dollar company. Will I ever will I ever see that in my lifetime? It’d be great if I did. But if I do, that means I didn’t set the goal high enough, right? You’d never be able to see my goal come the big goal come to fruition because I wake up I wake up every morning gives me something to chase. I Oh, I’m always chasing something. So I have a bunch Scott, I have a bunch of daily goals and stuff like that, that meet to the overall goal. But I would say right now the overall goal is, is to change people’s mindset to help change the world To be a more positive and better place
Unknown Speaker 17:02
in this fire signs account it’s probably sounds a little cliche but how you’re fine,
Unknown Speaker 17:06
but you’re doing it in a way that makes sense Adam where you know, you’re, you’re making a change how media is consumed and delivered, right? You’re putting the good out in front. That’s what we do here time to shine today where we don’t allow any of the negativity we set high goals. But we also know that the daily goals what you just said, are very important. We’re kind of inch by inch, it’s a cinch by the yard. It’s hard yet all my sports fans out there, you know, keep getting first downs that way, you don’t have to throw the Hail Mary saying so it’s kind of like that, which I appreciate you kind of agreeing in a sense with me. Some people don’t, which is that’s fantastic. So we all talk about here at time to shine today, the dash on your headstone. Man, you know, you have your birth date, your death date, and that dashes in the middle. That’s your story, man. How do you want to be remembered in that story, bro
Unknown Speaker 17:58
that dash
Unknown Speaker 17:59
100 What do you want people to remember about that dash?
Unknown Speaker 18:03
Man? That’s a no.
Unknown Speaker 18:05
Um, I just think I want people to remember me as as, as he was a good person with with a big heart that wanted to that that actually cared about other people and wanted to see them succeed.
Unknown Speaker 18:21
Love it total go giver full pull forward. That’s fantastic. Adam, if you could be one age for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Unknown Speaker 18:30
Ah, man, I’d say. I’d say 40 4040
Unknown Speaker 18:33
is a great age.
Unknown Speaker 18:37
Mass cold old you are. I’m 42 Now, are you 40 I’m 48 even
Unknown Speaker 18:41
last two years. I’m starting to feel a little.
Unknown Speaker 18:45
Keep walking. By the way, folks. This guy’s walking like four days. I mean, during the covert he’s still getting after it. I mean, I’m 48 and I’m the same way. It’s like we’re saying the same generational timeframe. Yeah, that’s that’s awesome. So let’s, let’s remove yourself. All phone your mic everything out of it. What are three things Adam cannot live without?
Unknown Speaker 19:06
Ooh, ah, nature. Okay. Can’t live without nature a
Unknown Speaker 19:15
lemon meringue pie.
Unknown Speaker 19:20
And
Unknown Speaker 19:22
I you know what I have to say my son.
Unknown Speaker 19:25
There you go. I was waiting for that. Yeah, that’s awesome. That’s awesome. So, Adam, what is your ask us? What’s your definition of a life well lived.
Unknown Speaker 19:38
I think you know,
Unknown Speaker 19:41
a life well lived is a life that that you can wake up and If you’re happy and you realize that some days you’re going to struggle some and other days Some days are better than others. life well lived is a life that that you personally feel like as has been fulfilling, but you can’t you can’t put it really because that that what you’re asking is is going to be custom to anybody. Right? So like when people ask me how do I find a success success, right? I define success is every little thing that I that I set out to accomplish that day. That means that was successful.
Unknown Speaker 20:20
But you’re breaking it down into mini micro goals and
Unknown Speaker 20:24
you have to because what happens is a lot of people like Oh, man, like you take that analogy is like, you know, use you see the staircase, you think that’s 100? That’s, that’s 100 flights of stairs. Well, you never get to the top unless you take that first step, right. That’s like your baby step all the way up.
Unknown Speaker 20:40
Doesn’t there’s no time. There’s no time limit. There’s nothing. You start moving forward.
Unknown Speaker 20:45
Right? You don’t know what God’s gonna do. You don’t know if he plans to take you in a car wreck or a plane crash? You don’t know.
Unknown Speaker 20:52
Yeah, I’m so glad I’m gonna elaborate on that because here’s the thing we already know what the end result is going to be. We just don’t know when that end result is that when that time is gonna come live life each and every day to the fullest, right? When I get up in the morning before my feet even hit the ground. I put a smile on my face. I’m gonna set the tone for the day. Yeah, granted, other things happen throughout the day where that smile might turn into a
Unknown Speaker 21:20
Yeah, but call it resting bitchface I pretty much tell you what if you see Adam, you see, he has that scowl, man. It’s like I don’t know if you want to mess with this. I have that permanent
Unknown Speaker 21:29
Yeah, I got the wind in my forehead. But man, I listen for your listeners out there. If you’re, you know thinking about doing a live change or whatever, just go start. Don’t you know don’t there’s no if you wait, well, I gotta wait for the perfect time. Bull. There’s no perfect time.
Unknown Speaker 21:45
Right time is right now that
Unknown Speaker 21:48
you know they say also like I saw in a movie of course but they say also about life is not to take it too seriously because you’ll never make it out alive. Right? You know, I’m saying dad, we’re all gonna die. Somebody will have fun and what you said putting a smile on your face and getting after it. That’s that’s where it all starts. you’re grateful. Right? So admins, we kind of wind things down a little bit, we do what’s called our level of lightning round. All right, so you and I could talk 1520 minutes on this, but my producers holding me to five second answers. They’re easy questions. Gotcha. Kind of like digging a little bit deeper. Adam, you’re ready to rock? No. What’s the best leveling up advice you’ve ever received? A good start, jump, jump. Love it. share one of your personal habits that contributes to your success.
Unknown Speaker 22:34
I write a list out every day that I want to get accomplished.
Unknown Speaker 22:37
Gotcha. Love that. Yeah, that you got to break it down. Other than your website. Here’s Media Group and of course time to shine today.com my shameless plug. recommend to us an internet resource that you’d like to go to level up. Oh, uh,

Unknown Speaker 23:03
to. Man, there’s so many of them like really I sit on the board of several of them. You got gallon few. Warfighter ranch. I’ll name those two. There’s half a dozen others that I could get into That’s awesome.
Unknown Speaker 23:17
