Their philosophy is simple: what is truly good for one is naturally good for the other, creating a symbiotic relationship. By connecting with local farmers and producers, they provide the best and healthiest food and goods available, while also supporting vital businesses and industries in the local economy. At the core of their mission, they only sell products they personally trust and use in their own lives.

To live a life of options and not obligations on this platform, we are stoked to bring you high performers, or not just chasing and attaining success, but where you defining it through providing above and beyond service in our really quick coaching nugget. Today is we’re gonna kind of get real for a minute.

Every day we are faced with a choice. Do we live for convenience or do we live for legacy? Convenience is that little voice that [00:01:00] says, take the shortcut. It’s easier. Skip the practice. No one will notice. But what’s cheap, it doesn’t matter. But here’s the truth. Convenience only feels good in the moment.

Legacy is built when you choose. The harder right over the easier wrong. Legacy says show up even when you don’t feel like it. Make the call even when you’re tired. Fuel your body. Your relationships, your business with what will last, not what’s quick. Convenience fades. Legacy compounds. Legacy is what your kids inherit, what your team remembers, what your community feels long after you’re gone.

So today’s squad, check yourself. Are you your actions feeding convenience or are they planting seeds for legacy? ’cause in the end, convenience disappears. The second it’s used, legacy is undefeated. And talk about legacy and also taking maybe the harder road. To, to really get the word out. And I’m so blessed to have my good friend Steven on because I want you to, again, lean in ’cause diving into a story that’s not just about business, it’s about building a better world, a legacy.

My guest is a [00:02:00] lifelong Floridian, along with his wife and teammate Alana, decided in 2018 to take a stand for health sustainability and c. Together they launched one World, zero Waste, a movement that provides when you do what’s good for the planet. It’s good for people too, from connecting with local farmers and producers to bringing you food and goods.

They personally trust and use. Steven and Alana are on a mission to reshape how we think about what we buy, what we eat, and how we live. This isn’t some abstract eco thing, something about convenience, you know, able to easily get it, which he’s making it easy to get. This is a real practical and local impact that supports families, businesses, and future generations.

So whether you care about your health, your kids’ future, or just a simple idea that your dollar can do more good than harm. Steven’s here to show us how. So let’s level up. My good friend Steven here he is, the co-founder Liz, beautiful, awesome wife, Alana from one World Zero waste thanking cup for coming on, brother.

Yeah, man. Thanks for having me. Absolutely. So I wanna hear the story. Like [00:03:00] it was an your honeymoon, right? In India?

Stephen Smith: Mm-hmm.

Coach Fergie: How did that conversation come up? I mean, obviously the seeds were ly planted before, but that’s when you kind of told me first time I ever met you, which you’re a kava buddy of mine.

We enjoy a kava together here

Stephen Smith: and there. That’s right. That’s right.

Coach Fergie: Um. But like, how did it, how did it

Stephen Smith: happen when me and my wife got together even before we got married, we, uh, were both serious into like, uh, starting our own business together. Um, building a life, uh, like that. Mm-hmm. Um, where we can sustain ourselves, work for ourselves.

We were really into food. We both work in restaurants. My wife is like a trained culinary institute, um, chef. Wow. So she’s way more serious about it than me. But I have the, the skills as well and the knowledge about like the restaurant and the food industry. Um, and so in thinking about what we wanted to do, the idea of like starting our own business, and then after we got married, we were in, um, India.

And realize like the, the [00:04:00] problems with, with waste, right? Um, and how in America it doesn’t really shine too bright here because we bring our garbage to the road, right? It gets neatly wrapped up and taken away. Sure. I mean, you drive down, you know, uh, the turnpike and you gotta turn your, your car thing on, so you can’t smell the landfill.

But, uh, you know, um, but in India, the thing is they don’t have the sort of municipalities that we have here in third world country. So. The trash was everywhere. Even like we were, we spent two weeks, like pretty high up in the Himalayan mountains, whereas absolutely gorgeous, pristine, but still, if you look over the side of the mountain, there’s like garbage on the, in the in.

Wow. You know, in on the ground. And, uh, in other places they would collect the garbage up and just like burn it on the side of the road. So this just like, kind of like shone a light on, on the problem that is, uh, the garbage, the waste that we create on this planet in general. And, uh, like, uh, we are a big part of the problem because, uh, you, [00:05:00] we, we think our stuff just gets like neatly taken care of.

Yeah. But it’s a real messy business and after it’s gone you don’t know what happens to it. Right. And uh, so that’s why we kind of got with the Zero waste initiative. Um, and uh, yeah, it started from there. We came back home. We were trying to like be mindful about the waste we were creating. Going to the normal grocery stores, like you don’t have much of an option, right?

90% of the grocery stores package stuff, right? So we realized there was a need and so we opened a small store where uh, people could come in and refill their containers. You can buy things without plastic packaging. Love that. You can just like buy things by the weight. Since we, uh, were a real small space, we, uh, focused on organic and like the healthiest stuff, everything that me and my wife and now a daughter, what we want to feed and ourselves.

Right? And so everything that we use is in our story.

Coach Fergie: I love that you use what you, you know, you sell. You took like two of my questions that I had kind of coming up with [00:06:00] this, with a, which is great with, with regards to, you saw what happened. It really sparked it in India to say, listen, how can we make our little part of the world better?

That’s right. Right. So then I’ll go to ask you this, what is one small zero waste tack that you use every day that people might not know about?

Stephen Smith: Oh, hey. Uh, bring my own water bottle. You do, bro. Yeah. You know, I don leave the house bar. You’re

Coach Fergie: like, here’s my glass.

Stephen Smith: That’s right. I bring my own glass at the Cava bar.

I love that. Yeah, man. Uh, it makes everything better, uh, and it gives you, uh, the, it just gives you a lot more freedom. Sure. Um, to drink what you wanna drink. Too. Uh, you know, it’s really important for me to drink, like clean water. Absolutely. I like to put salt in my water. I like to make some coconut water into it.

And so Watch of lights, baby. Yeah. It’s important to stay hydrated and uh, also, um, it’s great to drink out of things that aren’t plastic. Yes. ’cause uh, it’s just way better for our health because microplastics break down and they infiltrate our bodies and in our

Coach Fergie: land and like everything else. Absolutely.

[00:07:00] Absolutely. So when you open the doors, you know, to people who are new to eco sustainable. You know, zero waste thinking, right? Like, what are the most common mindset barriers you see? Like with the, with the newbies, the new new people kind of coming in and how do you kind of work? ’cause you’re so personable.

Like everybody loves you dude. Everyone’s like, oh there’s Steven. You know? So every is personable. So there’s, people are gonna listen to you, but how do you begin to shift those in a conversation? Like to get them moving towards, you know, your idea, the legacy. That you’re, you’re putting out there,

Stephen Smith: I’d say the most common thing people say is, it’s too expensive.

Coach Fergie: Understood.

Stephen Smith: Um, and my response to that is, you choose where you’re gonna spend your money because you can spend your money on your health now. Mm-hmm. And making good choices for yourself. Love it. Or you’re gonna be forced to spend your money later and when you’re sick and then you’re gonna feel bad.

Thank you for saying that, man. And yeah, just,

Coach Fergie: dude, I, I did a like a little formula that kind of scared me two days ago where. You know, I said, let’s say I will live to 97. Right? So that’s [00:08:00] 43 years, right? That’s only 2011 weekends. That’s it, dude.

Stephen Smith: Wow.

Coach Fergie: So I want, if I’m gonna live out those 2011 weekends, you know, with family, friends and stuff like that, I gotta put the right stuff, you know, in my body.

Absolutely. It’s going to work for you. I don’t touch anything that says enriched or, you know, uh, because it just, it floods your body. I went to Italy one time. I had, uh, crackers on me and they say, do you have anything to declare? I’m like, no. You know those orange crackers with peanut butter in the middle?

And they, they went through my bag. They’re like, what’s this? We like, we don’t allow that in our country. Processed right in, in Italy, they eat pasta and bread every single day. They’re all in great shape, but they’re not, they’re just not fat. Yes. You know, sorry if that offends somebody, they’re not overweight, obese, uhhuh.

Right. So that’s another thing, like you either pay a little bit more now or pay a lot later. Right. Absolutely. Love that. Yeah. You know, so in your store, I, I would wonder, and I’m. Like we’ve been trying to get me out there to get the behind the scenes of [00:09:00] the store, which I will get out there soon, I promise, Steven.

But, you know, how do you stack the goods you trust and use in your own lives? How do you vet a product before it even hits your shelves?

Stephen Smith: Hmm. So, uh, we have a lot of companies that we’ve done business with for years and, uh. Uh, in a lot of cases, uh, their, their standard is so high that it is trustworthy, and also everything that we buy is very transparent.

Um, like it can tell you about the origin of places, uh, all of the certifications that they have, um, and, uh, then as it comes closer to home as well. Uh, there are farms that are in our own neighborhoods that we get to go visit. Mm-hmm. And, uh, yeah, the, that’s basically how we do it. Um, we take, you know, good, you do the road work good sourcing.

Yeah, for sure. For sure. You do the work, it’s like, it’s important to know exactly what you’re buying. Yeah. Um, and to know what you’re [00:10:00] putting in your body. Sure. And that’s why we also are transparent about that with any customers. Sure. Who’s interested in learning. We have it out there. But also we can do deeper dives onto things, right, into specific things.

I do it all the time when someone wants to know about a specific product that can, yeah, I know that it’s gonna be good, but I can go and look up the exact little things that you want to know about it. Right?

Coach Fergie: And, and I kind of vetted a couple of your vendors, which I said, don’t say anything to Steven until this interview.

And they said, you are just fantastic to work with. Oh, you know what I’m saying? I, I vetted through, they actually answered the phone, called me back nice. And everything. We did it. So that, that, that’s amazing that you’re putting together those relationships and again. You know, it, it’s a long road ahead of us to get people, you know, away from things that are gonna inflame our body, you know, the waste that’s putting out there.

But, you know, with my, even my coaching clients, Steven, it’s like inch by inch, it’s a cinch right by the yard. It’s hard, can’t it change everything right away? Mm-hmm. You know? So, but you’re doing that incremental steps, so, you know, as, as the mission kind of scales, you know, how do you [00:11:00] ensure the same level of authenticity, quality, you know, staying true to the roots, you know?

’cause you see some places they were on a. Very high value, very good food. I remember just the taste of even McDonald’s when I was a kid versus now. Mm-hmm. You know how it’s fell off, like how do you plan to really keep that authenticity? You know, as you grow and scale your company.

Stephen Smith: Yeah. Well, in the, in it, I, I feel like it’s gonna be easier now than it was, you know?

Sure. The way things used to be. And then as they changed, it wasn’t exactly promoted out there that things are changing. Um, it was easier to like switch things around, switch ingredients, and nobody would really know the difference because they didn’t really know what was going into the things back then.

Yeah. Right. And so now people, uh, not everybody obviously, but more and more people as they’re growing more aware of these things that, that, and they wanna put good things in their body, uh, they’re gonna pay more attention and they’re gonna ask questions. And then for me, uh, to make [00:12:00] sure that everything that we sell is, is we just gonna hold the same standard as always, is that we’re not gonna sell it if we, it’s not something that we want to consume ourselves would use.

Love that. And so when we have that standard for ourselves, it’s makes it easy to make sure that what we get right is gonna be top notch.

Coach Fergie: And it’s awesome that you’re also open-minded. About what you might try. Mm-hmm. You’re not just like, oh, I’ll never eat that. No, absolutely. You’re still open-minded, like, hey, it might not fit us, but it still would fit another, you know, culture.

Steve Austin: Mm-hmm.

Coach Fergie: If you will. I love that. ’cause we had talked about that. Mm-hmm. You know, off mic and stuff, you know, regarding that. But right now, squad I’m gonna do is, I’m gonna actually throw it to Steve Austin. From Rise Mortgage, who actually shops at One World Zero Waste. That’s awesome. So I didn’t even know that until this morning, which is fantastic.

So Steve, take it away, brother. Let’s hear about the Good Market.

Steve Austin: Thanks, Scott. Happy Saturday everyone. This is Steve Austin with the Rise Mortgage Dynamic Team with your mortgage market recap for the week of [00:13:00] September 29th. And welcome to October. We had a slow and steady week of upward improvement in the mortgage bond market, landing US right in the middle of the highs and lows we saw through September.

This week finished off on a much quieter note than expected because of the government shutdown, because the jobs reports are ones that come from the government. The shutdown caused it to not be delivered. So with investors not being able to see that data, it left them in a bit of a holding position and not much action on Friday.

As long as the government is shut down, we won’t be getting those reports. We could expect things to stay relatively steady moving forward. All in all though, things in the mortgage world are in a solid level, and we are seeing buyers get some great deals out there. That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend everyone.

This is Steve Austin. You’re a branch manager, NMLS 7 6 2 3 2 8. With the rise mortgage Dynamic team NMLS 1 6 0 4 6 6 3 and equal housing lender.

Coach Fergie: Hey, thanks so much, Steve. And, uh, you know, Steven can’t wait to actually meet you again when you go back into the, you know, one, one world, zero waste into the store. So, [00:15:00] Steven, you know, the zero waste movement is an ambitious thing, especially the way that the world ends It. Is going. You know, some say perfection isn’t possible, but it’s not really possible in, you know, anything, but mm-hmm.

Others say every step counts.

Steve Austin: Mm-hmm.

Coach Fergie: So how do you balance aspiration with realism? Do you ever worry about overwhelming people or. Trigger the eco guilt. You know what I’m saying? Yeah. Like, well, you shouldn’t do that because there are people that do that. You don’t. Absolutely. But do you ever kind of worry about the overwhelm of, of how we’re ranking this change?

Stephen Smith: Yeah. Well, it’s easy to get overwhelmed about so many things. So it’s, uh, it’s important to, like we, we call ourselves one world, zero waste because that’s our aspiration. And it’s important to like, hold that goal, uh, in place even though like each day is just a step towards that goal and it’s not perfect.

Um, so I would say that, uh, you know, to, to hold a goal in place and [00:16:00] to, to take steps as as big as you can, as small as you need to. And don’t let yourself get overwhelmed because it, that doesn’t help anybody. It just makes things worse when you get overwhelmed. Stress comes in because we’re about like harmony.

Uh, between people, you and the planet, right? Um, and so like, we’re part of the planet, right? So if things are not going well with us, that has its own, uh, projection on how everything else goes too.

Coach Fergie: Absolutely. And, and squad, like you hear that the goals that he has, and we talk about goals and standards a lot that, you know, goals are nothing but byproducts of your standards.

What his standards are held in the, the standards that Steven holds is he, he’s so convicted about it. He understands. Again, it’s a slow. Grow, right? It’s like, what, where, where we’re going? Have you But Steven, have you ever, you know, had a moment where you seriously kind of question whether the path was sustainable for you personally, emotionally, financially?

Like, you know, just, is it something that [00:17:00] you’ve grew up always wanting? Or is this something like a passion project that you feel will burn out one day, which we hope it doesn’t. I don’t think it will, especially with you, but like, do you ever, is there any fear that kind of goes along with this growth?

Stephen Smith: Thankfully, for me, no. Okay. Um, definitely like fear doesn’t, doesn’t help. You know? Exactly. So Absolutely. I try to stay with a positive mindset and like, uh, take things as they come. Um, you know, we’re gonna have, uh, adversity, but part of, part of living is like overcoming adversity. Sure. Um, and so, you know, it’s.

I, I, I’m very, very blessed, right. Uh, I have, I, I, I have a great life and I always remind myself of that. And so the worst thing that could possibly happen is not bad. Okay. You know? So I feel really lucky in that way. Yeah, I understand. Not everybody, it, it takes a lot, maybe some for some people to get that point.

I love your conviction, man, but [00:18:00] I’m in a good position where that’s just how I am able to, to be.

Coach Fergie: And part of a lot of that is, you know, the, the partner in crime Absolutely. Alana, right? Yes. So, you know your teammates in this mission. Mm-hmm. Right. And so kind of walk us through how your, you know, partnership functions and moments of like stress, disagreement.

Like, if you don’t mind sharing this, ’cause this is a little bit more intimate details, but if something comes up and you’re like, oh my gosh moment. Right. You know, how is it work out? Are you the one that’s chill and she’s like, ah, is it you guys are both chill? Like, how does that work?

Stephen Smith: Uh, you know, uh.

Thankfully we’re a great team working together, so I have strengths and she has strengths and I have weaknesses too. And so we work, like we, we, we highlight each other and the oth and each person is able to like, you know, pick up where, where we’re strong and let the other person like, you know, take the race, not have to do that.

Yeah, exactly Right. I think we’re both really grateful for our, [00:19:00] for everything that we have. Sure. So, yeah, things can get stressful, but uh, we know that we’re gonna overcome it. It’s not that hard, honestly. Right? Nothing that you have to do in life. There’s always a road, right? You can always take steps forward and, uh, and so that’s just what we’re gonna do.

We, if you can see further down the road, you know what direction to walk, right? You know, we’re not just looking one step in front of the other, so. That that’s awesome that you guys

Coach Fergie: are planning. Mm-hmm. You know that your guys are planning, I see you in you when we’re sitting there. You know, we both have our laptops open.

Yes. You know, we’re doing work and I can see your, you’re planning and making sure all the steps work, and so the strengths are there and you guys play off of ’em. And where one might be weaker picks up the strength, right? Yes. That’s how it is with me and Susan Uhhuh. You know, we have a couple endeavors that we go.

I am, as you probably know, I’m the one that’s hot, right. Uhhuh, she’s chill.

Stephen Smith: Uhhuh. Right.

Coach Fergie: So with that, so you know. Quick tip for a listener who wants to begin zero waste, [00:20:00] right, but feels totally lost. Like where, where should they start other than coming into your store?

Stephen Smith: Yeah. No, just look in your garbage can and look and see what things you’re throwing away and that you’re throwing the most of away.

Right. And then look out for ways that you can reduce that, things that you can get that are reusable. We’re real big on reusable replacements for single use items, plastic paper, everything like that. We actually, uh, hand make a bunch of products like a line of zero waste products, uh, in Jupiter, Florida.

Where they’re replacements for paper towels and Ziploc bags and saran wrapping cotton face rounds and just like common things that we buy and throw away over and over. Sure. They’re just bought to be thrown away. So we make things that are buy that you, you buy them and you use them forever and uh, you just throw ’em through the washer and dryer like your other towels and clothes and stuff like that.

Uh, zero waste. Exactly. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Maybe

Coach Fergie: I’ve, in the end it’ll probably be worn out, but, but at least [00:21:00] you, how many uses Absolutely. That you have that

Stephen Smith: Years and years and years. Right. I’ve been using the same towels for like five years. That’s beautiful. And they stick together. They fit on my paper towel holder and That’s awesome.

Bags are great. They work better. Then the disposable products because they’re made to last. Last, right. Instead of being made to like, oh, these are crappy, I’m gonna throw it out right after one use. ’cause that’s what they’re, that’s what they’re for. Love it. So yeah, we make switches like that. Um, look at the garbage.

Coach Fergie: Love it. And, and like, just going back to my knowledge nugget, the coaching knowledge. I guy dropped the legacies there. The passion that I feel. This isn’t just a one stop shop and giving it a try. A lot of people will do that. Oh, I believe, believe, believe. And then they have a kid. It gets hard. Mm-hmm. You guys had a kid, you guys are still pushing through, right?

Oh yeah. So how about myths? Like the, what’s one myth that you’re kind of here circulating out there about zero waste or sustainable living that you wish people would just shut up about? Like, you know, what are the, be they saying out there?

Stephen Smith: So. I’m gonna put it out there, the myth [00:22:00] that, that everything that we recycle gets recycled.

Um, so even in the best case of a scenario, uh, a plastic bottle that you throw in the recycling bin can get, uh, recycled, but it turns into something of a lesser value, of a lesser quality. And so each time you actually are able to recycle plastic. It gets downgraded more and more until it becomes something that it’s not, that is not recyclable anymore.

Um, so it think, thinking that it’s fine, I’ll just get a bunch of plastic and I’ll throw it in the recycling and then it’s all good. Uh, that it, over time it just degrades more and more and, uh, that that’s a big part of the problem. Gotcha. Yeah. Gotcha. So.

Coach Fergie: Let’s put you in front of say, like Chelsea Reed and Palm Beach Gardens.

You know the mayor? Yeah, I know Chelsea. Like Chelsea great. And you know, I told her you’re bringing you, she’s like, I know. She knows me. Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, let’s put you in front of, maybe not her, but [00:23:00] another mayor or or city leader. Like you had 10 minutes with them, you know, who knows little about the sustainability, but holds decision power.

Like what’s your pitch to that person? To like really get them on board mm-hmm. With what your, your mission.

Stephen Smith: The pitch would be for quality of life.

Coach Fergie: Okay.

Stephen Smith: Um, increased quality of life, um, by, uh, you know, reusing things. Because another thing about plastic is it leeches into our bodies and it leches into our environment.

Um, and uh, that just affects everything. So it’s all pervasive. So quality of life, living longer, uh, being happier, having less disruptions to our endocrine system with plastics. Yes, microplastics are endocrine disruptors. Um, so, you know, uh, politicians should be about like, uh, making the quality of life of people in general better.

So I guess that would be my avenue to talk to them about.

Coach Fergie: Love it. Yeah. And [00:24:00] just getting in front of them and have them kind of like put the word out for you as well. ’cause they, we, where we live in south Florida is a lot healthier mm-hmm. In a lot of different places that I’ve lived. Yeah. So lucky. So you get a lot of, um.

You know, the not so much lot, lot less pushback I should say. So how do you want then, your dash to remembered that little line in between your incarnation date and your expiration date? Like how do you

Stephen Smith: want your dash to remember? Well, for the people in my life, you know, my loved ones, I just want to be remembered for as somebody who.

Um, you know, you could go to, you can trust who you know, loves you and, uh, will take care of you as much and as best as I can. And then to everybody else, I wanna be, you know, inspiring and empowering. Yeah. For people to, uh, make good, healthy decisions. Feel great. And just like overall raise the frequency of, of people, um, that it’s possible.

Yeah.

Coach Fergie: You know, have the zero weight It is possible. Yeah. [00:25:00] And feel good, right? Yeah. And just feel amazing. Once I started removing anything that’s said, processed or enriched, I feel fortified. I know. Get all that crap outta your body, man. Uhhuh, it feels amazing. So how can you know, I got one more question.

What do you feel is the definition of a life well lived?

Stephen Smith: What is your definition? A life well lived, uh, basically, I guess. Having built connections and trust with people in my life to make everybody’s life better. I love that myself. You’re living a life of

Coach Fergie: options, not obligations. That’s my whole credo is with that.

So

Stephen Smith: how can we find you? Oh, well you can visit our store One World Zero East. You can find us online on Google. You can uh, find us on Instagram, one World Zero Waste. Our website is one World dash zero waste.com. Um, all those places. So what’s your address? 3 5 4 South Cyprus Drive, Tequesta, Florida. 3, 3, [00:26:00] 4, 6, 9.

Coach Fergie: So it’s 3 5 4 South Cypress Drive. That’s right. Again, that’s 3 5 4 South Cypress Drive to Questa, Florida. 3 5 4 3 3 4, 6 9. Is that three? 3, 4, 6, 9. Yeah. 4 6 9. And you can also call them at (561) 468-3830. Again five six. 1 4 6 8 3 8 3 0. And do me a favor here and leave us with one last knowledge nugget about sustainability and zero waste that you want to really, if they remembered one thing from this chat that you and I had, what would it

Stephen Smith: be?

It would be that, uh, the health of people and the health of the planet are connected to each other. Oh my gosh. Strong and uh, as long, so good. If you’re taking care of yourself. Uh, optimally you should be thinking about, uh, how that’s impacting the planet. Um, and vice versa. If you’re concentrating on, uh, you know, your impact on the planet, uh, know that, uh, [00:27:00] that’s gonna coincide with, uh, healthy living and feeling good.

Coach Fergie: It’s beautiful, man. And just lean into it. Again, inch by inch is a inch. We can do this squad out there. There’s any leaders and communities out there. Please have them go to one world, zero waste. And you can kind of see how it can really help your community. A huge thank you to WJ and o to my producer Brian Mudd and my awesome sauce guest here.
