In this Knowledge Nugget, Coach Fergie explains why overthinking isn’t intelligence — it’s untrained decision making. Through a coaching story about an athlete who froze under pressure, he shows how hesitation kills opportunity and how execution comes from training fast commitment, not thinking harder. This episode gives a simple framework to build decision speed so you can perform under pressure in business, sports, and everyday life.
3 Actionable Take-Aways
- Shrink your decision window to 5–10 seconds and move when the clock hits zero to train fast commitment ⏱️
- Pre-commit to standards before pressure hits so you eliminate hesitation in the moment 🎯
- Act first, review after, and build clarity through execution instead of mental debate 🔁

[00:00:00] Alright, varsity squad Welcome back to your weekly coaching knowledge nugget. I’m Coach Fergie with Time to Shine Today Coaching. Let’s get into it. Overthinking isn’t intelligence. It’s untrained decision making.
A lot of high performers sickly wear overthinking, like a badge of honor. I just analyze a lot. I like to think things through. I’m strategic. No. You’re hesitating and hesitation under pressure is expensive. I see this constantly in coaching. I had an athlete. One time he was extremely smart, high IQ for the sport. <<READ MORE>>

In practice. He could break down positions, anticipate counters, explain exactly what should happen next, but in competition, he froze. He didn’t see the opening. He’d recognize it. Instead of going, he’d run a mental committee meeting. By the time he made a decision, the opportunity was gone. He thought the issue was confidence.
It wasn’t. It was speed of commitment. So we didn’t work on getting him more confident. We trained decision reps. We installed rules. Rule one, first clean read, go rule two, no second guessing mid action. Rule three review after not before, within weeks.
He [00:01:00] didn’t just look more aggressive, he looked calmer because clarity comes from movement, not from thinking harder. Here’s the truth. Squad your brain overthinks to protect you.
If you don’t decide, you can’t be wrong. If you hesitate, you can pretend you’re still evaluating. But growth requires exposure, and exposure requires decision. So if you’re stuck in business, stuck in your fitness, stuck in your leadership, here’s how you start training this. First, shrink the decision window.
Give yourself five seconds, maybe 10 seconds. When the clock hits zero, move no new data. Second, pre-commit to standards. Decide who you are before pressure shows up. When I see an opportunity I attack. When I fear, I lean in. Standards, eliminate debate. Third, run post action reviews. Don’t spiral before you act.
Act then assess, adjust, move again. High performers don’t think less, they hesitate less. So this week, stop trying to be smarter. Start training your decision muscles. Because overthinking is an intelligence execution is.
