Please introduce yourself the time to shine today podcast varsity squad But first what’s your favorite color? And why blue? Because it makes me look young. His laugh is infectious. So it, this is going to be such a fun. It would thing is, is [00:03:00] I’m going to have to stop myself from talking. Cause we’re, we don’t want to keep you guys here too long.
Cause there’s a lot of great knowledge. I guess the doc’s going to drop, but no blue, blue is perfect. It’s in your color. Will you handsome? Guy there. And but let’s, let’s kind of get to the roots of you, doc. Like, , like your walk with the Lord, but also just, , kind of your upbringing, how you’re brought up.
Well, actually I wasn’t brought up as a
Dr. David Chotka: Christian. I’m a, I’m a first generation believer. I met the Lord when I was 16 years old and it was the most incredible kind of thing.
L. Scott Ferguson: The
Dr. David Chotka: way it happened was I belonged to the drama guild of the St. Catherine’s collegiate Institute, not far from Niagara falls.
L. Scott Ferguson: Yeah.
Dr. David Chotka: And I love to act. If you can imagine me liking to act anyway, two brothers did too. So we belong to the drama guild and there was one day there was this kid who came into school late. He was Mennonite kid. And he had a black leather bound King James Bible in his hands and you don’t do that in high school.
L. Scott Ferguson: Yeah. I feel you, man.
Dr. David Chotka: What are you doing? Carrying that thing around you. You’re getting ready for a class on Shakespeare or something. And he said, Oh no, no. I believe it. [00:04:00] And they said, what do you mean? And within minutes. He had told them about the claims of Christ, and within a month, 60 people had come to Saving Faith in Jesus.
That’s great. And 30 of them were in the drama guild.
L. Scott Ferguson: Okay.
Dr. David Chotka: So I got to watch these, and, , I was curious about this, didn’t know what to make of this, etc, etc. And I remember one day that I wanted to figure this out. Now, my parents ran a diner with five apartments attached to it.
L. Scott Ferguson: Oh, wow.
Dr. David Chotka: And so you know what would happen?
People would move in, they’d leave something behind, you have a lost and found.
L. Scott Ferguson: Sure. And
Dr. David Chotka: an old, there was an old cloth bound King James Bible in that lost and found that had been there for six months. And so I remember these guys talking about this, this claims of Christ thing. And I was trying to, so I grabbed that Bible and what I would do, the routine was our host was right next door to our restaurant, which is next door to the to the apartments.
And there was a routine where we would come, I would come home, I would clean the floors, wash the fans, , that kind of thing. Sure. That the restaurant was ready for the next day. And it was after school and I was trying to figure this out. And at four o’clock [00:05:00] I sat down and I opened up this book that I’d never read before.
And it had, , I did what every student of, of, of literature does. I looked at the table of contents. Now I was a student of Shakespeare. I liked Shakespeare. I liked acting. So the language of the King James Bible did not disturb me. Right. Okay. But I found Luke and I had a buddy named Luke. And I found a book called Timothy and my brother’s name is Timothy, Timothy, Timothy two.
I’d never known that there was any books in the Bible named Luke or Timothy. And I was fascinated by that. And here’s what happens. I start to read Luke and while I’m reading Luke, I’m astonished by the healing stories of Jesus. Absolutely.
L. Scott Ferguson: Right.
Dr. David Chotka: And nobody ever told me there’s somebody went around healing the sick like this,
L. Scott Ferguson: right?
Dr. David Chotka: And while i’m reading about people getting well, I start getting a buck now. This was ironic It was I could feel it coming on. I walked next door I told my parents i’m gonna have to lie down I can’t clean the floor today and I go back into that bedroom of mine I close the door and i’m groaning and i’m sweating, with the fevers on sure and I [00:06:00] said to the lord Okay, I don’t know talking to air talking to the ceiling or talking to you But it’s really strange to me You That I should open up a book.
Everybody’s calling holy. I should start to read about Jesus making people well, and I get sick and I close my eyes to try and beat the bug. And in front of my eyes, in the eye of my imagination, I think sure. I see Timothy three 16. Now there’s a book in there called Timothy. I just discovered it because my brother’s name is Tim,
L. Scott Ferguson: right?
First or second Timothy.
Dr. David Chotka: Well, this is, this is part of the story. So I opened up to first Timothy three 16 in the old King James. Cause it’s all I had. And I had said, Oh God, this is a mystery to me. And I used that phrase and I opened up first Timothy three 16. And it said this without controversy. Great is the mystery.
And I stopped, I looked around the room and I thought, I just used that word to conversation with God. [00:07:00] I got directed to a verse in this book called the Bible and it’s answering my question.
L. Scott Ferguson: Yeah.
Dr. David Chotka: Close the book, , cause I didn’t know enough to read second Timothy. I just didn’t know enough.
L. Scott Ferguson: Sure, sure, sure.
Dr. David Chotka: No, I beat the bug in a couple of days. I went to the school, I saw my Christian fellowship people, they told me I should read 2 Timothy, it was about the authority of the scripture. Anyway, that was the beginning of this, and it was my very first ever prayer that I prayed, now it’s interesting, it was about hearing the voice, and it was about healing prayer.
L. Scott Ferguson: Yes.
Dr. David Chotka: Two of the themes of my life. I love that. That’s
L. Scott Ferguson: where it started. And silence is God’s voice that I’ve really matured into to really hear it. And it’s also crazy that you’re David, you have Luke and Timothy as siblings, and they’re all biblical in names, right? And yet, Timothy,
Dr. David Chotka: Luke is a friend, Timothy was my brother, yeah.
L. Scott Ferguson: Okay, gotcha, okay, gotcha. But, and then, another thing is that Luke, what I really found, Kind of fascinating about it is that [00:08:00] Luke is a doctor, , and of medicine, , and for him to actually talk about healing that really, if you really dig deep into that thought, being like a doctor, believing in miracles.
I mean, they don’t believe it. I’m like in our time now, right? So I always like thought that that was That’s pretty cool, , with, with that. And Luke is, oh, it’s my third favorite or second favorite of the gospels. Like, I really love Mark, not because it’s shorter, but it’s just really concised it up.
So that’s, that’s fantastic. So, okay. So you, you got into the word And then, like, what happened after that? I mean, you obviously probably surrounded yourself with the friends, the community. Well, actually,
Dr. David Chotka: it’s funny you’re talking about Mark. I’m writing a book on Mark right now as we speak. And so but I don’t know if you’ve noticed this about Mark.
It is absolutely crystal clear from the beginning of Mark to the close of Mark that Jesus ministry consisted primarily of three things. Preaching, healing the sick and casting out demons. In fact, [00:09:00] he gets filled with a spirit by John baptizer. He picks the four guys, Simon Peter’s synagogue with, , Mark and let it, so, and suddenly some demons starts to scream at the top of his lungs and tells him he’s the son of God.
He tells him to shut up and he casts the unclean spirit. No, listen, if that happened, your average Methodist or Baptist church down there, they would say. The guy’s had a medical incident or they would say something’s wrong with his preaching. We don’t do that here in that synagogue. They said, what kind of authority is this?
This guy goes around casting out the unclean spirits. And as a result, the whole village comes.
L. Scott Ferguson: Yeah. Okay.
Dr. David Chotka: So I’m telling you that because. I have noticed there are two books where it is really clear Ephesians and Mark. Those two books in particular have that theme dominating the book.
L. Scott Ferguson: Sure.
Dr. David Chotka: I couldn’t get my nose out of Mark, but I’ll tell you why.
The next thing that happened was people from that inner varsity fellowship invited me to hear an English Methodist preacher who came from, came to our area. And he was there because he wanted to talk about [00:10:00] the marks of the new birth. And I had had incidents for, I was walking down a hallway one day and one of those Christian girls from that fellowship was singing to him about Jesus blood.
And I became enraged and I didn’t know what to do with that. I wanted to grab that girl and shake her and stop her. And I stopped myself and I, but I would become agitated or or bothered if I heard people talk about the name of Jesus with faith, but it was curious. I was attracted at the same time.
And, and I couldn’t say Jesus name. I couldn’t say, I could say God, I could say Bible. I could say Christ, but I couldn’t say Jesus name. So one of these girls invites me to go and hear this English Methodist preacher. And he was hilarious. So I walked into the room. It’s an oversized living room and we’re in semi circle with him at the front, strumming a guitar.
And he’s short, five foot, two or three, sweating profusely with his glasses, constantly going down his nose as he looks at you, rubbing his hands together and saying, glory. Have you got Jesus in [00:11:00] your story? So he sees me in the room and he says, in the name of Jesus, you will sit and you will be still. And you will say nothing until the message is done.
And suddenly. I couldn’t move. I was, I was stuck in my chair. And then this guy preaches this amazing sermon about the marks of the new birth. And years and years and years later, when I was reading the sermons of John Wesley, I found the outline. He created outlines for Methodist lay preachers that were used all across England and the United States.
And this is one of his outlines called the marks of the new birth. Anyway, this guy would preach this thing. And the only way I could describe it was I was appalled. And I was drawn and then he said this if you want Jesus in your flesh, glory, hallelujah, come forward. And I shall pray for you. And I jumped and I was at the front and he said, no, no, not now.
When I finished my sermon, he
L. Scott Ferguson: said, sit still man up
Dr. David Chotka: in the front and about 15 peers. And I knew about [00:12:00] half of them from school. Okay. It was a young girl named Heidi and she was broken. , everybody knew she was a broken girl and he went up to her first and started to pray. And here is the decisive moment where I realized the destiny of my life.
He put his hands on her after he asked to pray. And she said, he said, would you please tell Jesus you love him? And she
L. Scott Ferguson: couldn’t. And
Dr. David Chotka: then she said, well, let me pray with you. And she said, yes. And then he started to pray. And it was like I was seeing something I’d never seen before. The man began to shine with his beautiful, gentle light and his hands began to shine.
And that light entered into that girl while I watched it. She went from darkness to light. And then he said, now tell Jesus you love
L. Scott Ferguson: That’s fantastic,
Dr. David Chotka: Sean. So he went to the next person, a girl that I also knew prayed with her. She was different kind of girl, but the same experience of internal consolation and peace filled her while he prayed for her.
It went all around the circle. [00:13:00] He came to me last of all. And I thought it was because I was the first one up. I don’t mean well, I’d say, Oh God, they’re getting filled with light. Wouldn’t that be nice. But I couldn’t say Jesus name. And I tried and it stuck in my throat. And I, so he came to me last of all, and he stuck his finger in my belly.
And he said, get out. I thought, Get out. What’s that? I looked down and his hand was shining and around the center of my abdominal region was an inky cloudy black mass. He said out in, out of that young man, out you go out in Jesus name, out you go. And his finger got higher as the black cloud rose,
L. Scott Ferguson: he
Dr. David Chotka: got higher and higher and higher until he came to my chin
L. Scott Ferguson: and the
Dr. David Chotka: black cloud flew out of my mouth, went straight through the wall.
And suddenly I was surrounded by a vision of glorious glory, huh? Light brighter than the sun and the light came inside of me. And then I could say Jesus name.
L. Scott Ferguson: That’s awesome, man. That’s how I got
Dr. David Chotka: started. That’s cool.
L. Scott Ferguson: That’s cool. Is your journey taking you on any travels anywhere? Yes, I’ve been to
Dr. David Chotka: 17 different countries.
In fact, I’m [00:14:00] going to Vietnam in October and I’m going to go to the Philippines in February. I’ve been to 17 countries. One of the most remarkable ones was when I went to Uganda, my church partnered with two American congregations. I was serving in just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in a congregation of about a thousand people.
And there were two congregations, one in Nyack, New York, and one in Atlanta, Georgia. And the three of us together partnered to help Uganda rebuild from its despair, been ravaged by Joseph Kony And there was a bishop there who was an organizer. He got, , this, if you have no education for 20 years, what’s going to happen to your society.
If you could read, you could become the mayor of the town. If you could read, you’d become the teacher, but you didn’t have enough education to be able to teach anybody. So, my church was assigned Aruba, Uganda. And we would do, there was crusade evangelism. There was a workshop where I traded 750 to a thousand pastors.
And there were work teams that we took with us and we paid the freight. We, [00:15:00] we paid for all of the travel expenses. all those pastors. And so, , when the day was done, my congregation, Spruce Grove Alliance Church in Edmonton area spent about half a million dollars to help that group of pastors try to get their legs back under them.
In fact, the first book that I wrote was written so that I could give it to them as a training manual.
L. Scott Ferguson: That’s
Dr. David Chotka: beautiful. So my elders looked at me and said, David, that’s a lot of money. Yeah. So they said, wait, we need to bring the man into the church. I said, look, he’s an African tribal. They don’t think like white Caucasians do in this church, , he’s right out of the tribe.
He’s the head of the tribe. He bosses people around. And they said, is he anointed? I said, Oh yeah. All kinds of amazing things happen because of this guy. And he’s the organizer for these thousand pastors to get trained. Right. Right. Bring them. And so what, what my elders, I said, what does he do? What are you going to fire me?
If he insults somebody, look, tell the church three weeks in a row. What that, what African tribals are like when they have [00:16:00] not been to a Western culture, just tell them and forgive you, but we tell them we told you to invite him. So anyway, this guy comes into my church and here’s what happens. We had three services on the weekend.
We had a Saturday night. And usually that was for the ones who wanted to sleep in or had a work shift or something. About 200 people would come to that. And we had a Sunday morning at 9 15, about 250 would come and the big service was the 11 o’clock. Anyway, the ones who come Saturday night hear these deliverance from death war stories as he’s praying against the army of Joseph Kony and E.
D. Amin. Lives are spared as somebody’s praying and everybody’s on the edge of their seats. And so they, they walk up to me and this preacher and they said, we’re coming again tomorrow morning. Tell different stories.
L. Scott Ferguson: So he
Dr. David Chotka: looked at me and I looked at him and we said, okay, we’ll do that. So he shows up at the nine o’clock and that’s the conservative culture one where everybody wants, , do this and get done. And I go off and make my roast and have my day. And so anyway, it’s now twice the size it usually is because the Saturday nighters have texted their [00:17:00] friends and their friends have come and now the regulars are there.
And then the whole crowd walks up and says, tell different stories. We’re coming to 11. So the 11 o’clock is jammed to the rafters. Now in the church is my wife who has been afflicted with FSH muscular dystrophy, fascio scapular humidor. Correct. Yes. Now that affliction is now in the news because the founder of lululemon has started to manifest the symptoms He’s just given us to find a cure.
And so it’s sagging face sagging muscles your Your muscle in the in the middle of everything’s atrophy If you damage a muscle you lose it your face sags You can’t whistle is one of the marks your shoulder blades go out of position. You get chronic pain between right You don’t die young but you die in a wheelchair,
L. Scott Ferguson: right?
Dr. David Chotka: Her mom had it Her sister has it. Her niece has it. It’s genetic. She had it. And I knew when I married the girl, I was going to be pushing a wheelchair. First girl to laugh at my jokes. I got to marry that girl. Absolutely. [00:18:00] We’re in our home and her arms can’t go higher than this, just above, just about shoulder length because of the atrophy of the muscles.
When she’s climbing stairs now, she has to grab the handrail, pull herself, grab her leg by two hands, put her foot there, steady it, pull herself up again, grab the other leg and do the same.
L. Scott Ferguson: Right.
Dr. David Chotka: You’re about to sell the house and get a one floor, , that kind of thing. Sure, sure. We had invited many friends to come and help us clean because she could not do that.
She couldn’t move the couch out of the way to vacuum under it and all those kinds of things. Lovely, lovely Christian. Let’s get the story
L. Scott Ferguson: going brother. Cause
Dr. David Chotka: so this, this, the church is packed. She’s sitting in the church and the, this Bishop looks down at me and in the middle of his war story, he looked down and he says, David, David, what is M a?
And I scratched my head and I said, M. A., Master of Arts. I don’t know. And he stops. He says, something’s wrong. He puts his head in the pulpit. He waits. [00:19:00] And then he looks up and he says, it’s a wasting muscle disease. It starts in your head. It goes down into your face. It makes your shoulders sag. You get a skull.
Yeah. Right. Describes perfectly. And then he says this, whoever has this, Jesus has just healed you. And I’m looking at my wife. And then in front of 650 witnesses at 10 42 AM, February the ninth, 2009. Her arms go above her head. All the pain vanishes from her body and she is instantly healed of FSH muscular dystrophy.
Her muscles started to regenerate. She ran up the stairs a week later, chasing my daughter. That’s phenomenal. That point forward, every muscle in her body heals naturally. It’s just this amazing. Now, does she get the odd flu or something? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She’s got an infection. Just had some antibiotic that happened.
L. Scott Ferguson: Right. The
Dr. David Chotka: point is this was incredible and it happened [00:20:00] instantly. Yeah. When a Ugandan bishop that we were trying to serve came from the other part of the world, stood in my pulpit and said this in front of a bunch of people who knew us, our doctor was in, was, was, was in the clinic that belonged to that hot to, to that, sorry.
One of my elders was, was a doctor named Tony Jones. His, his companion Sanji Bar was her doctor. Okay. He was one of the best in, in, in that part of the world. He knew her before. And after he waited three years to observe, and he wrote the medical note to say, there is no medical explanation. Yes. God is good.
L. Scott Ferguson: Nothing’s too big for our God. That’s for sure.
Dr. David Chotka: That’s it. That’s it. So that story’s in the book. So that’s about half. Yeah, let’s
L. Scott Ferguson: get into your book a little bit here, man, with the healing prayer, God’s idea for restoring body, mind, and spirit. Like, talk to me a little bit about this. I know that the story’s in there, but let’s get it.
The people that you want to reach with it. Like who, who really wants to pick this up?
Dr. David Chotka: Well, listen, everybody on earth’s got [00:21:00] somebody they’re praying for because they’re sick.
L. Scott Ferguson: Sure.
Dr. David Chotka: Everybody on earth. And when something catastrophic happens, they don’t even know where to start. I mean, their son’s in a car accident, their wife is in a
L. Scott Ferguson: car
Dr. David Chotka: accident with whatever.
They’re sitting in the hospital room and they haven’t got a sweet clue about what they’re supposed to say or how they’re supposed to pray. This book is to teach them how to do it. Actually, I want to see this in hospital bookstores. That’s what I’d like to see. It’s not there right now. It’s available anywhere books are sold.
But the book talks about how you. Pay attention to the signals that God sends when you’re about to enter into healing prayer. So one of the markers is an increase of compassion. One of the other markers is absolute focus on the other person. One of the other markers is a God awareness while you’re in the middle of this, and sometimes fiery presence, peace, and sometimes tears.
And you’ll find yourself praying when you’re not expecting to do that and you will feel a flow of power that will come upon you. In fact, this is described in Mark chapter five of Mark’s your favorite book. [00:22:00] When he’s praying for the woman with the issue of blood,
L. Scott Ferguson: she
Dr. David Chotka: sat behind him and grabs his robe and she, he’s not even looking at her.
He’s, he’s moving towards something else. Who touched
L. Scott Ferguson: me?
Dr. David Chotka: That’s exactly what happened. And then the text is very interesting. It says she felt within herself that she was healed.
L. Scott Ferguson: And
Dr. David Chotka: he said, I felt the power flow through me and out of me. And that’s the experience that I want to describe to people and to teach them one step at a time, how to pay attention to those signals.
So the book tells all kinds of healing prayer stories. And in each case, the practitioner who is involved in praying for the other is interviewed to describe what it felt like while they were doing it.
L. Scott Ferguson: And
Dr. David Chotka: so we have narratives, not just to people getting well. But of the people who are doing the praying who discover that they have tripped into this ability to be able to do this.
And so there’s, there’s one story in the book of a lady named Susan who was healed of pancreatic cancer. Now, I don’t know if you’ve [00:23:00] met anybody with that terrible affliction. If you get it, it’s a horrible way to die. You might have a month, you might have a year, but when you go, you’re going to be in excruciating pain.
Well, I met her when I came to heritage park Alliance church in Windsor, she came into my office. About a month after I arrived. And she said, I want you to do my wedding. I’m a widow widow and my husband, my husband to be as a widower. And Oh, by the way, pastor David, I thought you’re, I would be coming here to talk to you about my funeral.
I said, well, what are you talking about? She said, well, I had pancreatic cancer. And this conversation that I’m describing to you happened three years after she was healed. In fact, she’s still alive. 12 years. That’s beautiful. Here’s what happened to her. She, she got this diagnosis. She was going to die.
It’s a horrible way to die. She was in a small group with a bunch of friends and she said, I would like, you’re an elder, would you please gather some elders in the church here? Would you please anoint with oil and ask Jesus to heal me? So they all do. And I interviewed, I wasn’t there in the room. I did that [00:24:00] on purpose.
I wanted other people to describe what it felt like in their experience of prayer for healing. So there was a friend named Gloria and a friend named Wanda, there was an elder named Tim, and I interviewed each of them and had them describe what happened to them while they were in the healing moment.
They anointed her with oil, they asked if they could put their hands on her, they did, and suddenly the room filled with compassion. Every single one of them felt fiery presence flowing inside of them and through them and into her. And when she describes it, she experienced extreme heat, fiery consolation, peace.
And then suddenly she knew she was well. Wow. So the experience of the ones who were praying and the experience of the one who prayed, Are described and then I compare that to the biblical texts that talk that way. I want people to know
L. Scott Ferguson: there’s some science and the yeah, reason and [00:25:00] also faith and belief, right?
Well,
Dr. David Chotka: that’s just it. And the book is not what I call a, it’s not a name and claim it kind of book. There’s people who do those things and die. The book deals with the fact that we’re, we live in holy mystery. So the way I describe it is medicine, miracle and mystery and how they It’s awesome. And it
L. Scott Ferguson: goes right back to your psalm that you were reading, without controversy, it was a great mystery, right?

Dr. David’s. A book healing prayer god’s idea for restoring body mind and spirit and I love that He goes not just like again those that know my story. I was raised on fire and brimstone It wasn’t just god god. God. He he he puts it in both ways. He adds science to it He has faith to it has belief to it.
That’s one thing that I really respect about david. Dr David and and again the first three people that put david crockett Into any of our social or or text it to me. I will send out a a free book and doc If you could do me one last favor, let’s sell it and leave us with one last [00:29:00] knowledge nugget something good That we can take with us, internalize, and take action.
Dr. David Chotka: God’s desire to speak to us is greater than our desire to hear. And he will tell you when he has to direct you in your life. Oh,
L. Scott Ferguson: wow, that is strong. In Squad, we, I just had a really fun conversation with, he’s a new friend, but I’m going to build a friendship with this fantastic man. Dr. David Chotka, , drama club kid, , he was influenced by the arts and whatnot And the gentleman came in his friend or maybe not even friend He came in with a king james version and i’ll tell you what i’ve read the king james version 15 times in my life And it’s not an easy read and but with dr.
David Being, , into the Shakespeare. He really caught on to it and the messages just started to flow through his life And into other people he reminds us that without controversy great is the mystery, And he’s somebody that I I see that does it for the intention not the attention And those are [00:30:00] the kind of people that I really really love to be around and He’s planting seeds right now through his books and his teachings That he’s never going to sit in the shade of.
And again, those are the kind of people with our squad that we love to be around. And just remember that, , God, God’s desire for us to hear him. Is is it’s off the charts and And also a lot of times especially if you’re really getting into Into believing and really want to accept christ in your life, Remember that I was told that silence is god’s voice.
So there is answers there Just you have to really listen for it. And that’s what my good friend. Dr , David kind of really kind of put out there that they have the faith in the belief, and that’s what my good friend, Dr. David does. He levels up his health. He levels up his wealth. He’s humble, yet he’s hungry.
His energy is just infectious. He’s earned his varsity squad letter here at Time to Shine today. Thank you so much, Doc, for coming on. I absolutely love your guts, my friend.
Dr. David Chotka: What a delight to be with you. God’s peace to you.
