Unknown Speaker 0:12
time to shine today podcast varsity squad. This is Scott Ferguson wood Episode 223 with my really, really good friend, Catherine Canty, the tenacious connector, Catherine has like a really awesome step by step formula that she uses to help you level up your leadership and your communication and just take it to the next level whether you’re an entrepreneur or privateer, or within a business that you’re really looking to climb that ladder. So without further ado, sit back relax, because here comes our really good friend Catherine Canty. Let’s level up.
Unknown Speaker 0:53
Time to shine today podcast. Firstly, squat it is Scott Ferguson, and I got my beautiful, awesome sauce. Friend, leadership coach, Catherine Canty. She’s out in the Carolinas, where she says a little bit humid. But it’s still beautiful country. It’s God’s country, in my opinion, as well. But she’s a tenacious connector and a recovering banker, which I can’t wait to get into that story. Again, she’s a leadership coach helping high potential managers turn into senior leaders and her sales program for business to business selling is creating exceeding results. Catherine is a wife and mom and cares about closing the broad band gaps in rural communities. And Catherine, thank you so much for coming down the time to shine today podcast, please introduce yourself to the squad first, what’s your favorite color and why?
Unknown Speaker 1:43
My favorite color is royal blue. So blue is is kind of a tranquil color. And then the color royal kind of gives a little bit of a pop and makes it pop out. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 1:52
like the ocean. I’m looking at the Atlantic right now. And I see this beautiful blue, but you’re adding a little bit of that royal teen regal into it, making it a royal blue, which is from what i’ve vetted you out within your social circles and whatnot online. Absolutely. That’s what you bring. So let’s get into some a little bit of origin stories, if you will, of kind of becoming I’m thinking maybe even a burned out banker into leveling up and then helping people make that step up as well to help them get to their full potential.
Unknown Speaker 2:22
Yeah, thank you, Scott, first for having me on the show. I’m excited to be here. And, yeah, 20 years in banking, it’s been good to me. So you know, everybody wants some dramatic story that there was a blow up and there was nothing traumatic. It was just time for me to keep learning and keep going. And I had kind of Meech reach the max where I was. So 20 years allowed me to travel around the country and help other people grow their business, which is awesome. And I thought, well, why not apply everything I’ve been doing everywhere else and bring it back home and dive into leadership coaching, which is something that I’ve been doing indirectly influencing and working with folks over the years and just said, let’s do it. So took the leap of faith, then, you know, few years later, here, we are chatting,
Unknown Speaker 3:07
gasca, 20 years. It’s a lot of time for any money. And so you’re going around and helping people grow their businesses through I’m presuming your banking company. And so what is your hubby in family? And everybody kind of think about that transition into leadership coach? Making your income is pretty good for what you did, right?
Unknown Speaker 3:31
Yeah, my boys get that. Yeah. hardest part personally, like I’m working through that. Now. You know, at some point in life, you begin to realize you do have everything that you need, and you really don’t need a whole lot. I mean, research shows, if you can just bring home 70 to 100, you know, life changes for a lot of people. And so yeah, when I’m in that position in a bank, life is definitely coming with a lot of benefits. And so that was a hard decision that that I had to make. And I think, well, it took me two years before I actually said, I’m gonna move on. And I had to hire a coach and invest in myself and get together a game plan and create some small wins along the way. And even 30 days out, I told my husband, I’m putting in the notice. And he was like, there’s no way that you’re going to turn in your notice you’re gonna be bored out of your mind, this is probably not gonna be the best decision. But if that’s what you’re going to do, then then go for it. So don’t wait for it.
Unknown Speaker 4:30
Awesome. So let’s get into the coaching like what do you think makes a great coach?
Unknown Speaker 4:36
I don’t think it’s about the coach. I think it’s about the individual. It’s about the stakeholders around the individual. And if the individual has made up their mind that they’re willing to create a transformation in their own life. They are capable of doing anything. And those are the kind of people that I that I seek to out to support and to work for. And it takes a lot of courage and humility and discipline to be able to step up and say, I’m really successful in my career, but I’m ready to take it to the next level. And who am I to be able to engage stakeholders and say, hey, how do I run the next meeting better? How do I communicate more effectively, you know, continue to ask these questions, but in a very strategic forward focus, build yourself up and bring your stakeholders along. There’s a great process that that seems to be working for the clients that I’ve been with. And they have been able to create 100% measured success as seen by their peers and their stakeholders, not by what I think so but to begin with, it’s all about the leader. It’s not about a coach, it’s about that later. And have they decided that they’re willing to take that risk on?
Unknown Speaker 5:42
What’s the background? And the it sounds like to me, you’re actually coaching people that might be in mid level management and helping them get to that senior management. Is that correct? Are you taking on other entrepreneurs? Or what? What’s your story that
Unknown Speaker 5:56
it’s anybody who’s ready to be able to make this change? And you know, I think a lot of people think they need a coach. And really, they need more of a therapist, and the process that I’m using is not that at all? And what I have been noticing it, I love it, I love it. Do you want to share
Unknown Speaker 6:14
no go? Okay, I’m cheerleading you on right now. Go ahead.
Unknown Speaker 6:18
Yeah, I have to cut the people out that come to me and they’re looking for a therapist, I’m like, that’s just not the game plan we’re going for we’re going for results. Going for effectiveness, we’re going for recognition, we’re going for we’re going to make some some big changes in your life that are going to happen over the course of six to 12 months, depending on what your timeframe is. And so yeah, we’re, we’re working with these folks. And they’re creating the change. And it’s, it’s just a process that we that we have that we check in. And it’s it’s very much about building up the individual and, and leaning them in towards the future and where they want to go,
Unknown Speaker 6:54
I love it that you’re say you’re a coach and not a therapist or a consultant, you know, because like you’ll help them build that game plan to help them communicate effectively to their stakeholders, and the people that they’re trying to lack of a better term and process to move up that ladder. But you’re carrying the game plan, they have to go take action, you said the R word, they have to be ready for it. Right. So within that, when you’re starting to bring a prospect or maybe even a client in what is some of your secret sauce there at Catherine Canty that maybe we’ll help them identify their blind spot.
Unknown Speaker 7:30
A lot of it is listening. And asking them, I think there’s a great quote out there that the love leaders of the past, tell people what to do, the leaders of the future are going to ask people, and you know, that quotes been around for a long time. And I think it’s consistent today. And as things continue to evolve, especially post COVID, and those new world that we’re gonna live in, which is going to be okay, things are gonna happen, and there’s going to be changes. And this is how a lot of other people were able to capture opportunities. So we’re about to sit on a lot opportunity here. And so the game plan going forward is to continue to ask really good questions and to listen to what these answers are. And truly, just listen, and don’t argue with these people and give them the patience and space, if they’re showing the progress, the reflection that they need, in order to reiterate these accomplishments that maybe they were struggling with in the beginning, and they get a little momentum, and we can build on that and build that success for them.
Unknown Speaker 8:28
Love it. So while you’re bringing somebody in to your process of Katherine, Kathy, is there any good question that you wish they would ask you, but never do? That’s a really good question. Time to shine today, baby. We’re just getting started.
Unknown Speaker 8:45
This is awesome. A really good question to ask me, I, okay. My initial reaction is, I can’t think of one. And I’m just gonna be honest with you. I cannot think Oh,
Unknown Speaker 8:55
please, I appreciate that. Because I was asked that question. And I was like, Oh, crap, you know, I’m saying but what it is now is I wish they would ask me what’s expected of them, because a lot of people just think you’re gonna provide them a game plan and just go at it. But you answered it earlier, would they have to be ready and be able to rock so I appreciate you being transparent, honest with that when I don’t ask you to trip them up. It was a question that really hit home with me when I was interviewed. So I appreciate appreciate that. So, you know, here in South Florida, we were able to get out there and network press a little flash, of course, mass stuff and all because we’re in day 9815 a quarantine by, right? Who’s kind of, but no, seriously, what am I listening for? If they pull me aside and we’re starting to talk and I’m, you know, I have one mouth and two ears for a reason. That would make them a great contact referral or connection for Katherine candy.
Unknown Speaker 9:47
Yeah, so great question. And I have an example of a of a new client that came to me it’s a CEO, and he’s looking for a succession plan. He can teach them the day to day stuff all day. He’s like, I can teach you how to run the meetings, I can teach you how to hold these, these conferences, I can teach you, you know how to manage all these systems. But as you grow within this organization, he has two to three people identified. And these are the three people that I’m actually working with to coach. And we’re going to work on leadership. And they may not know that they’re part of that succession plan. So this is going to be coming from the CEO, it’s going to be coming from the HR department, it’s going to be coming from anybody who knows the language of nine box and succession planning, and all that good stuff. And so you want to get your leaders ready. And so if this person were to take the CEO position, what is something that they they’re obviously going to be talent, but they may need one or two things tweaked in order to continue to improve. And in one example, I’m working with one person, if they were to become into this CEO position, they know communication is going to be key. And so maybe they start out the career incredibly great and talented with communication. But as they hit the CEO position, they’re going to be out on a circuit, and they’re going to have to communicate with people more effectively. And they’re going to have to connect with the folks that are in that room. And to do that we coach them on communication. Another example is an individual who loves to be in the details, but they have got to learn to delegate more effectively if they’re going to take on the CEO position. So what we’re doing is working with them, what can I do going forward to improve my delegation amongst my team, because if I take on additional responsibilities, something has to go. And so these folks are getting primed for this position. And they might not know that they’re actually in in the hot seat, you know, my gonna get picked. But, you know, the CEO is getting them prepped, you know, teaching them just the day to day stuff. But you can’t, nobody has enough time to teach somebody how to communicate more effectively, how to elevate their executive presence, how to delegate more effectively. So that’s what we’re looking for. And so you’ve got these folks that are about to get into the C suite, or they’re already in the C suite, and they just want to elevate it. So elevate
Unknown Speaker 12:02
it and level up to there. So do you, Coach companies ever? Catherine, are you mostly one to one?
Unknown Speaker 12:08
Yeah, so I’m actually doing both I’m doing I’m working with individuals. And I’m also working with groups, I’ve worked with a group of 16 individuals, and they were extremely high potential talent, they needed to be tweaked on, you know, just a few opportunities, in order to get them ready for the C suite within that 16 individual, six month team engagement. 100% of these folks created measured success as seen by their peers and stakeholders, two of them were actually promoted into that C suite role as a result, because when COVID hid in the middle of this, they had full staff, everything was beautiful, everybody, you know, nobody was going to age out or anything. But stuff happens that were unexpected. And they had these folks groomed and ready to jump in.
Unknown Speaker 12:51
I love that. So when you’re going in is a lot of times it’s a top dog the CEO brings I know with mice, myself, I coach some bigger companies. Yes, your opinion on this. When you bring you in the CEO probably brings you in or someone who around that level, right to coach up their team. You always had that one guy that’s below the CEO who his ego is bam, right? How do you handle him?
Unknown Speaker 13:17
I love that. So back when I was in banking, after share story, and please, I don’t even know all the if it’s, I think it’s applicable. So I took in a bank position where I was the second female and 100 years ever take this customer facing position. And I was told that it was going to be darn near impossible to get five stars out of five stars for your personal rating for managing these very difficult accounts. And I went around the country sat in a bunch of board rooms, and we know what board rooms look like. So it’s going to be challenging, there’s going to be different personalities, etc. I went out there and listen to the people that were in the boardroom, I listened to their leadership team, I listened to the people that were the front of the bank, I think it’s real important to listen to what’s going on to watch what’s going on. Within 90 days, we happen to have a personal assessment because that’s just when they happen to drop my 90 days within there. And I remember my manager came in close the door and said, First he started laughing He said, I don’t even know how you did it. Right? I said well, oh, God helped me now when I What did I do? And he said, you actually got a perfect five out of five for these relationships that we just assigned to you. And it took me 10 years to do it. So this is pretty amazing. You were able to accomplish that within 90 days. And they also held on to me the fact that I didn’t have a big agricultural background, and I was able to connect with people who were not like me, in order to, you know, figure out what the true need was and bring it back and communicate it. So sometimes there’s, there’s, I hate to say it but it’s just something that you know, you know, they’re going to be there. And at times, I can feel that body language that I just need to walk away from them and give them some space. Yes. And then there’s other times where I just seem to say, Hey, you know, Scott, I appreciate your opinion, but I just need you to kind of temper down a little bit while we’re working through this process.
Unknown Speaker 15:10
Yes, yeah. And also keep them included, and everything that they need to be included on because sometimes they think that they’re, they’re going to be replaced. So no, I appreciate appreciate that. So I’m, I probably am a little bit older than you, but, like, if you ever seen the movie Back to the Future, I love that movie. Okay, so let’s go back with Marty McFly in that DeLorean. Okay, let’s go back to this a 22 year old Catherine Canty it might not have been candy then. Let’s go back to 22 year old Catherine.
Unknown Speaker 15:39
It was actually just a new Canty married crazy is anything right? Okay.
Unknown Speaker 15:44
So let’s go back. And what kind of knowledge nuggets? That’s what we’re calling here. Time to shine today. What kind of knowledge nuggets? Are you dropping in that 22 year old Katherine to help her level up blast through maybe shorten that learning curve? Just a little bit?
Unknown Speaker 15:57
Stop being so hard on myself? Yes, yes. She listened. Yeah, thank god she did, because I got fired more times than I can think of when I was 20. coming out of college, and I had a four year degree and I’m elegant, right. Yeah. And at these jobs, I mean, it just was not clicking. And I wouldn’t give up. Right? Yeah, just crazy stuff happens. And either I needed to leave or it just wasn’t going to be a fit. And I was just like, oh, and so it was really hard and painful coming out of college and being able to find my way and find that position that was going to make an impact. And yeah, just be be kind to myself and know it’s gonna work out and thankfully it has knock on wood. It’ll keep rolling.
Unknown Speaker 16:41
Love that love that. Um, we say this. How do you want Katherine’s dashed? Remember that little line in between your incarnation incarnation date and your expiration date your life date and up there? How do you want Catherine’s dance? Remember? She helped other people. Yeah, I can see you kind of let you went through kind of sliding into home plate with a sports metaphor kind of bumped and bruised along the way but helped as many people as you can. Is that true? That’s my goal. Yeah, good for you dive headfirst baby. I love it. I love it. So what keeps you up at night, Catherine,
Unknown Speaker 17:18
my brain does not stop like it is clicking and thinking and just go on 24. Seven. It could just be running various projects that we’ve got going on. It could be just different work projects that are going on, you know, just opportunities are out there. And I’m trying to evaluate and see which ones are going to be the best use of my time in order to have the biggest impact.
Unknown Speaker 17:40
So what do you think people miss misunderstand the most fun, Catherine?
Unknown Speaker 17:47
Quiet and understated probably before they begin to speak with me and listen. So I know right now, Scott, you know, this is probably pretty strong. And we’re just kind of firing back and forth. Yeah, sure. as heck do you not see this common?
Unknown Speaker 18:01
Where they don’t? That’s awesome. And if it’s even harder, I hate to bring this up. I mean, it’s like if you’re watching on YouTube or any of our channel, she’s a beautiful woman. And but you you would think that you would assume possibly that she had weak spots, but you might have them. But you’ve worked a lot. We all have them. I’ve got plenty. Yeah. But you’re probably I think people might assume Well, she just looks a little meek little woman you come in with a firecracker if you add a light enough, right? Yeah. Good for you, man. Good for you. Good for you. So who then? Not not? Let’s just say that what’s the best I want to ask who actually do who has had the most profound impact on your life and career.
Unknown Speaker 18:42
There was a guy that I worked for when I finally got one of my banking jobs, and he helped me put things in perspective. And he also took the time to teach me about just day to day banking operations. And he also said I was a little bit odd because I could have a sales process and go communicate with customers. But yet I understood the operations and what needed to get done at the end of the day. And so he mentored me, he sponsored me, there’s a big difference between those two words, that’s you. And he took me on for a good 10 years, and I learned more stuff from him. And I think that helped pave the way into banking and the other opportunities that that continue to flow.
Unknown Speaker 19:30
And I love that because that guy’s immortal now, because you’re passing on what my mentor always said, you know, the more you mentor, the more immortal you become. And because people just remember that’s, I asked that just to see it. And that probably was not me. It was probably a little bit ago. Correct that you met.
Unknown Speaker 19:46
That was 24 year old
Unknown Speaker 19:48
dude. I mean, it pulls forward. Thank God for that guy, man. That’s fantastic. Yeah, that’s so fun. What is Katherine’s definition of a life well lived. Let’s take
Unknown Speaker 19:59
everything thing that we’ve learned the ups the downs all the junk that’s in between and let’s pay it forward and help the other people that are coming along behind us because I literally cannot be sitting here right now talking to you Scott without those people that helped me and while I was receiving that information, I just felt like how do I give give back you know, I can get bring them a bottle of wine or a thank you note or like that, but I mean, that’s that’s not 40 years of wisdom and support, right. So so this is my way of being able to turn it around and to be able to pay it forward to those that are around me.
Unknown Speaker 20:34
Love it, pay it forward ups and downs and pay it forward. Time to shine today podcast first you squat we are back with my good friend Catherine Canty leader she kick ass leadership person.
